Buy the Morden Work Pants sewing pattern from Thread Theory. These work pants are designed for comfort and true function. The roomy legs, knee darts, close-fitting gusset, and raised centre back allow for an extreme range of movement. They can be sewn with a myriad of useful pockets and also include the option to add a hammer loop, reinforced knees, and a reinforced hem.

The instructions include many tips for fitting and working with heavier weight materials. Choose between a workwear version with double topstitching and details designed for heavy wear, or a stripped down version that would make excellent activewear trousers in lighter materials.

Sewing level: Intermediate

Suggested fabrics:

Main: For casual everyday wear, choose trouser weight wovens (light to medium weight) such as twill, denim, canvas, and gabardine. Alternatively, use materials suited to the intended use of the pants. For example, for hiking, mountain biking, or outdoor workwear pants, choose water-resistant cottons or synthetic blends designed for activewear (such as ripstop). The designer does not recommend using stretch fabric. If you wish to use a stretch fabric, you may need to size down.

Pocket lining: Broadcloth, quilting cotton or other strong, tightly woven cottons or cotton blends.

Fabric requirements:

Variation 1: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.5 m (3 7/8 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 3.0 m (3 3/8 yd).

Variation 2: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.0 m (3 3/8 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 2.5 m (2 3/4 yd).

Pocket lining: 115 cm (45") or 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 0.2 m (1/4 yd).

Sizing: 0 – 18 (approx. UK 4/6 – 24/26, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: 0.9 m (1 yd) of lightweight fusible interfacing; 1.3 cm-2.5 cm (1/2"-1") jeans button; 18 cm (7") metal zipper (zipper length is intentionally longer than needed so it is easier to sew with); pliers for shortening the zipper // Optional: topstitching thread or contrast colour thread for visible stitching details; 4-6 rivets; rivet setting tools.

PDF pattern includes: Step-by-step instructions; US letter/A4 print-at-home pattern (36 pages + 16 additional pages for Variation 1); 36″ wide roll feed copy shop pattern (1 sheet + 1 additional sheet for Variation 1); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: Yes.

Great fitting pants

Against pattern advice, I made View B from a stretch twill I had in my stash as a fit test. The pattern is beautifully cut, and the instructions easy to follow (the problems I had with the fly fastening due to a combination of the stretch fabric, poor choice of zip and plain bad workmanship!). I’m 5’ 4” with a 38” hip, and made the size 6 without any pattern adjustments. The fit is great at waist and hip, and I’m delighted with the crotch length. Had to take 2” off the leg length before hemming. The pattern says to maybe make a smaller size if using stretch fabric, and this pair could certainly work a wee bit smaller. But for the ‘proper’ non-stretch denims I’m about to make, all I will do is shorten the trouser leg by 2” but otherwise use the size 6 as is. Such a great pattern, and my next version will have all the bells and whistles from version A.
