Buy the Lazo Trousers sewing pattern from Thread Theory. These elegant pants feature relaxed, tapered legs, useful pockets and roomy pleats. The easy fitting legs are balanced with a closely fitted, wide waistband designed to highlight an hourglass figure by sitting high on the natural waist. The jaunty, overlapped extension is a great place to display unusual buttons or buckles.

This sewing pattern includes two design variations. Sew full length trousers with a streamlined waistband, or create cuffed cropped trousers with large pointed belt loops. The Lazos are an excellent introduction to all the techniques involved in sewing trousers. They are a relatively quick pant project (no yokes, no darts, no flat fell seams!) that will result in professional looking pants.

Sewing level: Intermediate

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

- PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

- PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you'll need to download the digital instructions, as we don't print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Suggested fabrics: Light to medium weight fabrics that drape nicely. These trousers are especially comfortable if the fabric contains a small percentage of spandex for stretch. Keep in mind that the pleats will look best if you choose a fabric that presses crisply. Great choices include suiting fabrics, tencel or rayons, crepe de chine and peach skin.

Self fabric or lightweight wovens can be used for the waistband facing. Pocketing or tightly woven cotton can be used for the pocket lining.

Fabric requirements:

Variation 1 (full length): 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 1.8 - 2.5 m (2.0 - 2.7 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.3 - 1.9 m (1.4 - 2.0 yd).

Variation 2 (cropped): 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.1 m (1.8 - 2.3 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.2 - 1.5 m (1.3 - 1.6 yd).

Pocket lining (all variations and sizes): 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 0.3 m (0.3 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 0.3 m (0.3 yd).

Sizing: US 0 - 18 (approx. UK 6 – 18/20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Two decorative buttons or buckles; one slim 1.3 cm (1/2") button for the interior of the waistband (optional); 15 cm (6") trouser zipper; 0.7 m/yd of medium weight interfacing (51 cm/20" wide).

PDF pattern includes: Step-by-step instructions; US letter/A4 print-at-home pattern (25 pages); 36" wide roll feed copy shop pattern (1 sheet); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: Yes.

Lazo trousers - Thread Theory

The Lazo Trousers are the first pair of trousers I've ever made and they are soooo nice that I had to write a small review!

I had to make a lot of amendments to the pattern because I traverse between 3 sizes from waist, hip and thigh so they took me a short time to sew up, but a long time to get the fit just right for me and I wanted to do the adjustments while I was wearing it and not on the flat pattern.

The instructions were good and easy to follow, the fly was definitely the most intimidating piece of this pattern but wasn't as tricky as I was expecting.

Fortunately there is a really good guide on the Thread Theory blog which shows you how and where to make adjustments for 'problem areas' so it was really easy for me to identify where to add extra for my 'full thighs' and how best to take in and shape for a smaller waist. I will definitely be making more of these and i especially want to try the casual lounge version that's up on the blog too!
