Buy the Haslam Hat sewing pattern from Thread Theory. The Haslam Hat pattern is an incredibly quick sew that produces a wonderfully cosy hat. This versatile, gently square-topped beanie features multiple design options and sizes. While most adult heads will fit the middle size, smaller and larger options are also included.

Choose between ear flaps, a classic beanie hem band, a yarn pom pom, and fun fleece tassels. This design can be sewn in many fabric types and is a great way to use up scraps of fleece, old sweaters, and soft knits.

Suggested fabrics:

Main: Medium weight sweater knit fabric such as sweatshirt fleece, lofty French terry or flannel.

Optional contrast lining: Lightweight sherpa, sweatshirt fleece or flannel.

Fabric requirements:

Main: Variations 1 and 2: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 0.8 m (7/8 yd) / 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 0.5 m (1/2 yd) // Variation 3: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 0.9 m (1 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 0.5 m (1/2 yd).

Lining: All sizes/variations/widths: 0.5 m (1/2 yd).

Sizing: S – M – L. Please check the designer’s size chart.

Most adult heads will fit size M. To accurately measure head circumference, circle the tape measure around the widest point of the head — from the most prominent point of the forehead to the widest point at the back of the head. This measurement won't necessarily be parallel to the ground.

Notions: Ballpoint sewing machine needle // Optional: Sewing clips rather than pins; hand sewing needle (for sewing with bulky fabric and to attach pom pom or tassels); 1 small skein of yarn (at least 46 m/50 yd) for pom pom; an additional 0.45 m (1/2 yd) of self fabric for tassels and ties; 1 m (1 yd) of twine or similar strength string for attaching pom pom or tassels; 1 palm-sized piece of cardboard to make pom pom (or pom pom maker).

PDF pattern includes: Step-by-step instructions; US letter/A4 print-at-home pattern (12 pages); 36″ wide roll feed copy shop pattern (1 sheet); A0 copy shop pattern (1 sheet) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: Yes.

Great hat

This is a perfect hat for cold and windy days in nature. I made the second variation and added ties. It was a quick sew, and it took a couple of hours from transfering the pattern to a finished hat. The instructions were clear and well-illustrated.
