Buy the Celia Dress sewing pattern from the Modern Sewing Co. Celia is a classic, long length shirt dress with a collar, lapels, two-piece sleeves and an optional tie belt. The dress is fitted on the shoulders and features an A-line cut with plenty of room for comfort and movement.

Celia can be made in a wide variety of fabrics to suit different occasions and times of the year. Cottons and linens work very well for summer, while light wool suiting could be used for a warmer winter dress. Some fabrics will elevate the piece to feel like a very smart dress, while a more casual fabric will result in a garment that feels more relaxed and easy.

Beautiful classic shirt dress

I really love the Celia Dress by The Modern Sewing Company.

The instructions state that the pattern scans to UK dress sizes accurately, which I found to be the case. I made a straight size 10, which I would typically buy in ready to wear, and have a really nice fit across the shoulders and bust. The pattern is drafted for a body of 5ft 8 and the dress is designed to be almost maxi length. I chose to remove six inches from the length and could comfortably cut the dress from 2.6m of fabric.

I really love the design details included in this pattern. The subtle gathering at the front and back, the two piece sleeve (I have not seen this before) and the beautiful collar all make this dress really special and elegant. I made my version in a Liberty tana lawn and it feels quite smart but I could also see this dress looking more everyday and casual in a viscose/linen, a cotton gingham or even a block print.

I found the instructions to be fairly clear and suitable for someone who has had a bit of shirt making experience. The only thing I noted was that the sleeves need to be eased in and the instructions don't tell you to add gathering stitches to the sleeve head which I definitely felt I needed to get the sleeve in without puckering. On the plus side there is no collar stand so the colllar construction is pretty straightforward and gives a lovely result.

All in all I think this pattern is a bit of a hidden gem and one I recommend to anyone looking for an elevated shirt dress for summer.
