Buy the Arthur Pants sewing pattern from Sew Liberated. This whimsical pant reimagines a wardrobe staple: casual pants with a uniquely fun shape.

A collaboration with designer Debra Weiss of Specks & Keepings, the Arthur Pants combine the classic comfort of wide-legged pants with dramatically shaped side seams and a tapered hem. The fit is relaxed, with plenty of ease, a high waist, a lowered crotch, and roomy pockets. View A has a zipper fly with an elastic back waist. View B has a full elastic waist.

Versatile and appropriate to any season, the Arthur Pants will become a key part of your sustainable wardrobe. They pair well with the Strata Top, or underneath a Hinterland or Metamorphic Dress.

Suggested fabrics: The Arthur Pants are designed for mid-weight woven fabrics, such as linen, gabardine, silk noil, lightweight twill, or cotton chambray. If you make the elastic waist version, you can also choose knit fabrics, such as French terry, interlock, or mid-weight jersey.

Do not choose fabrics that have significant drape. You want enough body to support the shape of the pant leg.

Fabric requirements: 45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 3.6 yd (3.3 m) // 54" (137 cm) wide fabric: 3.4 yd (3.1 m).

Sizing: US 0 – 30 (approx. UK 6/8 – 28/30, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 5'7". The waistband sits at the natural waist, and the hem falls just above the ankle bone.

My second pair of Arthurs

I made these from linen bought in Lithuania. It's quite light but holds the all important shape.
The pattern is straightforward with clear instructions for the flat fell and French seams which obviate the need for any overlocking.

I bound the raw edges of the fly and fly extension, taking care that it finished the right way out. Also finished the ankle hems that way.

I did find, maybe because I also bound the front crotch, before joining it with a conventional seam that there was no need to clip to the seams below the zip assembly. I've added a photo showing that and am sorry to have cut the seams.

Last time, I made a note that, at 4c, on the extension, I should make the seam wide enough to match the width of the crotch seam. I must have done that this time as didn't experience an issue.

The sides are joined with French seams. It is then suggested that you top stitch for the look of a "faux" flat fell seam. To avoid wrinkles, this is better done from the right side.

I love these trousers!

I made these trousers a few weeks ago and they are so comfortable.  Add to that, the shape is really unique but still flattering, and they are easy to make (I made the elasticated version following the video tutorial) for beginners with a little sewing knowledge and experience.
