Buy the Pleat Asymmetrical Pants sewing pattern from Ready to Sew. Inspired by traditional Thai fisherman pants, Pleat offers a modern interpretation with a minimalist yet distinctive silhouette. With its straight leg, 7/8 length, and mid-rise waist (size range 1) or high-rise waist (size range 2), Pleat combines comfort with clean, sharp lines. A single pleat on the front creates subtle asymmetry, adding structure and interest while keeping the look refined.

Designed for confident beginners, Pleat is made of just three pattern pieces and has no side seams, making it quick and easy to sew. But unlike the usual basic elastic-waist pants often aimed at beginners, Pleat delivers a more elevated, design-forward twist — a piece that's both accessible and full of character.

A matching children's version is available here.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: Some of the pattern pieces have been split (to fit on the A0 sheets) and will need to be joined together.

Suggested fabrics: Choose a stable fabric such as cotton poplin, cotton sateen, or chambray weighing 120-180 gsm. Select a fabric with a tight weave and avoid overly fluid fabrics like tencel or viscose, as well as unstable fabrics like linen, since the front pleat is cut on the bias.

Fabric requirements:

Range 1 (sizes 32-46): 145 cm or 160 cm wide fabric: 220 cm.

Range 2 (sizes 46-52): 145 cm or 160 cm wide fabric: 250 cm.

Range 2 (sizes 54-58): 145 cm or 160 cm wide fabric: 250 cm*.

* For size 54 and above, you will need fabric that is 160 cm wide to follow the original cutting layout. However, if your fabric has a similar warp and weft, you may place your pattern pieces with the grainline following the cross-grain to use 145 cm wide fabric.

Sizing: EU 32 – 46 and EU 46 – 58 (approx. UK 6/8 – 14/16 and UK 18 – 30, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart. The designer recommends you choose your size based on your hip measurement.

Note: The size ranges have been drafted from different blocks. Range 1 (32-46) is based on a height of 167 cm and a B cup. Range 2 (46-58) is based on a height of 168 cm and a D cup.

Notions: Range 1: 3 cm wide elastic // Range 2: 4 cm wide elastic.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (49 pages for sizes 32-46, 84 pages for sizes 46-58); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets for sizes 32-46, 4 sheets for sizes 46-58) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: No.

I had such high hopes for these trousers. They looked so comfy and floaty and just the perfect lounge trousers. I decided to make a colour blocked version to really play with the asymmetric leg. The instructions were ok but confusing in parts and honestly these trousers whilst comfortable aren’t as comfy as I envisioned. I used cotton fabric for both legs and they just feel twisted. I know that the design is such that it is slightly twisted, but they just felt wrong to wear. I’ve barely worn them since making them and I’m just so sad because I really wanted to love them.

Not the best instructions

I made these pants in a soft cotton.  I used the size guide and the pants were at least two sizes too big.  When they were finished I had to cut down about 5 inches from each side seam (this meant I had to create side seams) and about 6 inches from the top (the waist band sat just below my bust).   I am not sure how the waistband is supposed to be cut, but I thought I followed the pattern and the band was only half as long as it needed to be.

They were easy to sew and the instructions pretty good.    If they had fit, it would have been an easy sew.    I will probably wear them around the house.
