Unique trouser pattern and a really satisfying make

I really like the design of these trousers and overall a great beginner sew, which I would highly recommend if anyone is looking to make trousers but gets a bit worried re: fitting issues. They come in an excellent size range and Ready to Sew have some handy guides on how to adjust the fit and how to make tying them more straightforward.

This pattern is very straightforward and comes together very quickly. I also foresee being able to very easily customise this or mash up different fabrics to make a very unique pair of trousers. I have made my first pair in a black linen – these trousers are perfect for a medium weight linen – as was in need of a pair of black trousers in my wardrobe. I fully expect I will be making more with contrasting ties or pockets in the future.

I do have a couple of criticisms or issues with the pattern, however I do not think this should stop anyone making the pattern as they are easily worked around. I say this more as a “heads up” for anyone who is perhaps not as confident in their sewing.

,Waist ties: In the pattern, for the smaller size range and in the general instructions, I am not entirely clear on how one is supposed to make the ties. It appears that you cut 2 pieces, however this would lead to very thin ties. I wanted a decent width of tie, so cut 4 pieces instead of 2. I also chose to save fabric and use smaller pieces as you cannot tell at all with the black. So a small issue, but worth bearing in mind if using a printed fabric.
,Waist band piece: The pattern calls for a waist band strip, but there is not waist band pattern piece included. This was an easy fix as you can simply cut rectangles matching to waist circumference using the tie pattern piece. I did this and folded on the long edge to enclose the raw edges. I think you could also very easily use a broader bias tape (i.e. >3cm) and I did consider using a contrasting bias, however played it safe for make number 1.

I do not think these are reasons to not make this pattern, just things I did not feel were immediately clear! I have looked at the Ready to Sew website and there isn’t a tutorial to accompany, which is not like them. I’ve also reached out the them regarding the above issues and if I get any updates will email The Foldline team to amend/update this review

I also bought the PDF with copyshop printing – this is my go to option when buying from The Foldline and I 100% recommend it. The paper quality is excellent; you get patterns pieces that are far more robust than the tissue we are used to from the Big 4, but you can still fold them up for easy storage. You also get the envelopes with annotation space, so really cannot fault that!
