Buy the Calyx Smock sewing pattern from Pattern Fantastique. The Calyx Smock is named after the part of the flower where petals and fruit form. Balanced between the decorative and utilitarian, the pattern stems from the designer's memory of the hairdressing apron her mother wore in the late 70s, combined with a gathered smock the designer's mother dressed her in at the same time.

The neckline is high with gathers radiating from the binding. Cropped above the knee, the shirttail hemline gives the illusion the dress is shorter than it really is. The top version has a subtler hem shape for an even finish around the high hip. Both versions have options for a rolled or faced hem and cap or elbow length sleeves. There is a tie closure at the centre back.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following format:

– PAPER (next working day dispatch on orders and FREE UK delivery over £50)

Suggested fabrics: The Calyx Smock is suitable for many woven fabrics. Use a fine, sheer lightweight silk for some fully floaty romance, or a mid-weight denim for some mid-winter layering. But do not use fabrics that are too thick to bind after gathering.

Fabric requirements:

Top (shorter sleeve, rolled hem): 122 cm (48") wide fabric: 170 - 190 cm (68" - 75") // 150 cm (59") wide fabric: 135 - 140 cm (53" - 55").

Top (longer sleeve, faced hem): 122 cm (48") wide fabric: 200 - 250 cm (79" - 99") // 150 cm (59") wide fabric: 140 - 160 cm (55" - 63").

Dress (longer sleeve, faced hem): 122 cm (48") wide fabric: 270 - 290 cm (107" - 115") // 150 cm (59") wide fabric: 210 - 220 cm (83" - 87").

Sizing: 6 - 18. Please check the designer's size chart.

Notions: Stay tape; matching thread and topstitching thread.

I like the end result, but…

the instructions were odd. They were sometimes very specific and at others times a bit vague. At one point I got to some instructions that sounded very strange. I looked at my project and thought “well, at this stage I’d usually understitch” only to realise that’s what the instructions were trying to tell me to do, without using that actual word! I was also using tencel fabric which, while lovely, had a tendency to fray a little. I therefore found the binding for the neckline too narrow as I had to fray check the front in a couple of places to hold it together… All in all I’m pleased with the end result but I wouldn’t recommend this pattern for a beginner and would recommend making the wider binding even with thinner fabrics if they’re inclined to fray.
