Buy the Block Tee sewing pattern from Paper Theory Patterns. The Block Tee (formerly known as the Kabuki Tee) is a modern, oversized t-shirt, designed to look relaxed and feel easy to wear in a woven fabric without restricting movement. The body is much wider than a regular t-shirt and the sleeves are longer than normal, sitting just above the elbow, with the angular armholes being its hallmark feature. The neckline has a hidden binding to complement its minimalist design, and the hem turn ups are extra deep to emphasise its boxy silhouette.

Suggested fabrics: The pattern was designed with a woven fabric like linen or cotton in mind, and it works equally well in something light and drapey like a crepe de chine or silk. However it could easily be made in a jersey or stretch fabric with some consideration taken into account for finishing techniques.

Sizing: UK 6 – 28 (approx. UK 6 – 30, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Fab and super quick make

I feel I am a fairly slow sewer but found that the block tee came together very quickly and was a satisfying project. I recommend watching the video on the paper theory YouTube channel that covers how to insert the sleeves as this is a very different construction approach and I think I would have been confused had I not watched the video before starting the project. I also loved the way the neck finishing is completed after sewing only one shoulder seam. This is such a simple trick but makes the neck super easy to do with a professional finish. I will try to carry this technique into future projects if I can

A fantastic 'basic'

The Block Tee is a really useful, wearable garment that also has interesting construction details and is fun to sew. I made my version in a straight size 8 with no alterations and I'm really happy with the fit - it's the perfect amount of 'boxy' for me! The fabric I used is a beautiful silk noil from The New Craft House and the weight and drape works really well with the style of the top. I know that some people are put off making this pattern because of sewing 'those corners', but there is a very useful blog post by Paper Theory with further instructions for this step and it really isn't that bad! Other than that stage, construction is a breeze and this was a quick and satisfying sew - highly recommended!

Very cool pattern!

I had some trouble with the sleeves. Ended up seam ripping them both out twice. But I was determined! And this Block Tee is such a cool looking top. It’s roomy and has a lovely drape. Will definitely be making more!

Great pattern for a total beginner

This was my very first make and it was great. I watched the video on right-angled corners which was really helpful. I managed to cut and make it in a day/afternoon and it was super satisfying and confidence-building for this beginner! Might make another one.

Boxy Tee for Woven Fabrics

A boxy, roomy tee for woven fabrics. It has kimono sleeves with a great geometric detail of right-angled corners where the sleeves are attached to the bodice at around the bust area. I sized down because there's quite a bit of ease drafted in. I used a viscose linen that I self-dyed with shibori techniques.
