My Nina Lee Mayfair Dress Review

The Nina Lee Mayfair dress is hands down my favourite pattern! It's so feminine. I can't wait to make more of these.

I made a maxi version in a rich red polyester jersey. It's a light/medium weight, drapey fabric.

The pleated neckline is well explained in the instructions.

I had some trouble sewing the neckline/shoulders.

I also didn't love topstitching the belt. It doesn't look neat. The jersey shifted as I was sewing the belt down, so it looks a bit wobbly :(

Other than that, the dress is loose, so fitting was easy. The belt is what creates the cinched-in waist.

I have more makes and tutorials on my blog Threads Monthly.

PS. When I took these progress photos, I still needed to hem the sleeves.

My Christmas Day Mayfair dress

This is the third Mayfair dress that I've made and I think it's now one of my favourite dress patterns. I love that you can dress it up or down.

It only has a few pattern pieces and is deceptively quick to sew up. I love the draping around the neckline and the depth of the neckline works really well.

This version is in a stretch velvet and the only changes I made to the pattern were to add 4 inches to the length to make it midi length and to add a narrow cuff instead of topstitching the sleeve hem as it would have marked the velvet. I also used a blind hem stitch when I was hemming the skirt.

Mayfair Dress review

I really love this pattern - I've made two now and find them perfect for summer. I think the construction and pattern drafting is very well designed because it only requires a few pieces to some together. The collar and waist ties give you all the shaping you need as well as creating a very elegant drape. All together, this makes for quite a quick and relaxing sew - not too many seams and no hassle with fit. I haven't yet tried a maxi version with longer sleeves, but think that you could definitely use this for an evening dress.
There are also a further two benefits, in that it is quite quick to sew (less than a day) and it doesn't use a lot of fabric - Mine only used 1.5m. I would really recommend this pattern, because I think there's a lot of potential with the various options and I wear mine a lot!
