Buy the Kew Dress and Skirt sewing pattern from Nina Lee. Kew is a dreamy blend of vintage and contemporary elements inspired by the British summertime. Think picnics and garden parties, strawberries and cream, sometime sunshine and being beside the seaside…

Version 1 has a touch of 1940s tea dress, with ruched sleeves for those cooler days. Version 2 is hot-weather ready, with a strappy bodice and the option of on-trend cold-shoulder sleeves. Version 3 is a skirt adaptation, perfect for dressing up or down all year-round.

The skirt for all three versions features an elegant high-low hem which dips at the back. All three options close with a front button fastening, and are finished on the inside with facings.

Very flattering dress

This is a really great pattern with clear instructions and loads of possibilities for modifications. One thing to note, in case its not obvious, this pattern has 15 buttonholes to make which is not an easy task if you have one of those fussy sewing machines.

Made mine in red crepe from Fabric Godmother, worked really well.

Kew Skirt - extended size

A kew skirt in a 16/18 from Nina Lee's extended size range! A great staple skirt with lovely shape and fab button opportunity. Very good instructions, a quick make and many possibilities. Love the Kew dress and this add-on is super.

Nina Lee Kew top and skirt

All I can say after making this pattern is I can't believe it took me so long! I have now made it as a crop top twice and a skirt once.

My first crop top version was a straight size 10 which I’m honestly not sure why I cut it out as I measure a 12. I can only presume I cut out the wrong size. I’d started it well over a year ago, tried it on and sulked when it didn’t fit so threw it in the naughty pile. Trust me when I say if you’re between sizes do not size down with this pattern as it is fitted. I took out all the seams I could and managed to get it to fit fairly well.

For my second version I made the following adjustments using the By Hand London bodice alteration ebook for guidance:

,1.5cm full bust adjustment
,1cm narrow neck adjustment
,1cm armhole lowering adjustment

Liquid gold - Nina Lee

I love this pattern! I've made two - one in a cotton sateen and one in a viscose.

I've written a blog post about the viscose one which also involved a fairly tricky sleeve hack.

Nina's patterns are well drafted and her instructions are detailed.

I had to shorten the bodice and skirt, both of which are standard alterations for me (I'm 5'2").

Depending on your fabric choice, this is a versatile pattern.

Happy sewing!

Lovely dress! - Nina Lee

I really enjoyed sewing my Kew dress, and I love how it turned out! I used version 1 of the bodice from the main Kew pattern, and the gathered skirt from the expansion pack.

The instructions are very clear and detailed and I didn't have any trouble at all during the sewing process.

My measurements put me between two sizes and I chose to make the larger size to give a little more ease (I prefer a bit more breathing space in button-up dresses to avoid the risk of gaping!). I lengthened the bodice by 2" - I usually have to lengthen bodices, but this is slightly more length than I usually add. I also omitted the ruching on the sleeves - I think it looks pretty, but when I made a toile I found the ruching made the sleeve a bit bulky under a cardigan, and it also restricted my arm movement a bit.

I can definitely see myself making more Kew dresses to try out the other bodice and skirt options!
