Pocket lining: 110-150 cm wide fabric: 0.3 m.

Sizing: UK 6 – 18 (approx. UK 6 – 16/18, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions17.5 cm (7") metal jeans zip; one button, approx. 18 mm; jeans needle; large eye sewing needle; matching thread; heavy duty contrast thread/topstitching thread; matching standard contrast thread (to use in bobbin).

Note: We have found that a heavy duty thread rather than a topstitch thread gives a more authentic look to the topstitching and is easier to use. You may find that you get a better stitch using a matching standard ‘sew all’ thread in the bobbin.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (35 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets).

How I make my Heroine Jeans

I have made multiple of these jeans, I wore through the first pair and I have plans for more pairs out of corduroy! To find more about how I make jeans you can read more on the blog.

Lovely pattern but a bit big

Merchant & Mills patterns are all beautifully presented, and the instructions were great but I found these came up big.

Firstly, although usage is given for selvedge denim (usually 82cm wide), the pattern is not drafted for selvedge ie the outer seam is not straight. I hacked it by straightening off and allowing the pattern piece to sit as close to the selvedge when cutting - this may have contributed to them coming up big.

When choosing my size I went off the finished garment size - I’m apple shaped and it put me in a 14 at the hip and over the 18 at the waist and I graded accordingly - however when I did my final fit (before finishing side seams) I found they were huge, and took them in by around 4” in total around the waist and graded to nothing around the bottom of the hip. TBH, given the nature of denim and the way one wears it (ie a lot between washes), I could have probably made a straight 12 knowing they would have been more snug around the bum and hip and still maintained a straight leg look.

They were also very long and I modified this after the second fit too. I recommend checking against existing pairs of jeans to avoid wasting fabric.

A lovely high waist, wide leg jean

Another lovely pattern by Merchant and Mills - highly recommended if you are looking for this style of jean.

I left off the large turn up cuffs - not really my style - and this reduces the fabric required for the make by the reduction in length, which might be helpful to know for ordering your fabric if you are planning to do the same, so check your preferred finished leg length.

I also sized according to the finished garment measurements rather than the suggested sizing - going down a size at the waist from what was recommended - I wouldn't want a bigger size - so once again check this when sizing. As they are designed to sit on the natural waist, it is easy to make an ease decision. I had 2cm of ease on paper and probably a little more with the ease in the denim in reality.
