Suggested fabrics: 8 - 12.5 oz. denim (up to 14 oz. with a heavy duty sewing machine).

Fabric requirements

Self: 83 cm wide fabric: 1.8 - 2.2 m // 120 cm wide fabric: 1.3 - 1.8 m // 140 cm wide fabric: 1.15 - 1.35 m // 150 cm wide fabric: 1 - 1.25 m.

Pocket lining: 110 - 150 cm wide fabric: 0.3 m.

Sizing: UK 6 – 18 (approx. UK 6 – 16/18, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Metal jeans zip; one button; jeans needle; large eye sewing needle; matching thread; heavy duty contrast thread/topstitching thread; matching standard contrast thread (to use in the bobbin).

Note: We have found that a heavy duty thread rather than a topstitch thread gives a more authentic look to the topstitching and is easier to use. You may find that you get a better stitch using a matching standard ‘sew all’ thread in the bobbin.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (30 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets).

Long and elegant

Excuse the dorky photo! This is my pleased face. I debated about buying such a simple skirt pattern as im sure I have something in my stash I could modify. Well, so glad I didn’t! Merchant and Mills patterns are well drafted. I was very doubtful about the weird shape of the shaped waistband. Turns out it went on perfectly and fits like a dream! Small details make their patterns worth investing in.
I made according to my size. I checked pattern pieces and did a tissue fit. Glad I did.  I also basted all the seams first and made a few minor adjustments.
I like the M template for the pocket, instructions are detailed and accurate.
pattern fits well ( I did lengthen it as I wanted calf length. I didn’t do all the topstitching as I want to wear this for work and topstitching gives it a more casual look.  I also added interfacing to the waistband although you might not need to with denim. This is a brushed cotton twill. It’s exactly the skirt I needed in my winter wardrobe.

The Clementine review

The Clementine is a close fitting denim skirt with shaped waistband and back split. The pattern is part of Merchant and Mills’ Made in Denim collection that they released back in May 2018.
Since there are lots of topstitching involved – with using contrasting thread too, it took me a whole week to finish the project. Slow seems to be the keyword.
Unlike conventional denim, this skirt doesn’t use flat-felled seams, nor rivets. Instead the pattern tells you to fold the SA to one side and double topstitch. To reinforce the pockets, instead of rivets, it uses bartacks – which happens to be my machine’s arch nemesis.
It is advised to make a toile for this, but I didn’t. I made sure I cut the size that would give me enough wiggle room should I need to resize – based on my body and finish measurements. I made a straight size 12 with minor alterations. Being short (I’m only 158cm tall) I shortened the skirt a lot, by 11.5cm to be exact.
I rated the pattern 3 stars out of 5.
