Suggested fabrics: Light to mid-weight woven fabrics with some drape. For a summer weight dress, choose any of your favourite fabrics from cotton lawn, voile and poplin to linen and chambray. Rayon, silks and sheer fabrics would also make a beautiful Asteria for confident sewers. Light to mid-weight denims, pinwale (baby) cords, barkcloth, flannel and wool and wool blends can also be used for a heavier weight dress for cooler weather.

Fabric requirements: Extra may be required for pattern/print matching or adding length. This pattern is not suitable for 115 cm (45") wide fabric.

View 1: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: Sizes 6 - 14, 2.75 m (3 yd) // Sizes 16 - 24, 3 m (3.28 yd) // Sizes 26 - 34, 3.5 m (3.82 yd).

View 2: 150 cm (60") wide fabric: Sizes 6 - 24, 3 m (3.28 yd) // Sizes 26 - 34, 3.25 m (3.55 yd).

Sizing: UK 6 – 24 with A – D cups or UK 16 – 34 with C – F cups. Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

Note: There is a crossover of 2 cups (C and D) and 5 sizes (16 – 24) between the Original and Curve size ranges. The Original and Curve patterns are based on two different blocks, and because of this, the shape, ease and proportions of the crossover patterns vary depending on the block used. Please check both size charts if you fall into this range.

To determine your cup size, wear supportive undergarments, then keeping your tape measure parallel to the floor (make sure it is not dipping at the back), measure both your full bust (the widest part of your bust, all the way around) and your high bust (the upper part of your bust around and under the arm pits). Use the difference between these measurements to determine your approximate cup size: A cup = 1 cm (3/8″), B cup = 3 cm (1 1/4″), C cup = 5 cm (2″), D cup = 7.5 cm (3″), E cup = 10 cm (4″), F cup = 12.5 cm (4 7/8″). Then, to determine your bodice size, find your full bust measurement (or closest to) along your corresponding cup row on the size chart.

Notions: Lightweight fusible interfacing, approx. 84.5 cm x 68 cm (33 1/4" x 26 3/4") // View 1: 1.5 cm (5/8") wide buttons or snaps, 5 for A-D cups or 6 for E-F cups.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (62 pages for sizes 6-24, 74 pages for sizes 16-34, but you only need to print the pages for your cup size); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets for sizes 6-24, 4 sheets for sizes 16-34, but you only need to print the sheets for your cup size) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: No.

Broderie Anglaise Asteria dress

The Asteria dress is a lovely pattern . I made this version from broderie anglaise which I underlined in voile. I used a yellow broderie anglaise as accent with the belt and buttons. It feels lovely to wear, feminine with a lovely full skirt and deep pockets.

I made this as a maternity dress so graded up at the waist , it still works well post baby and has great frontal access for breastfeeding.

I love Jennifer’s patterns and this one is great!

A new classic - The Asteria Dress

Look what's not to love, an excellent dress pattern that will do you all year long with a bit of interest/vintage-ey vibes with the square neckline without going all out/putting pressure on you to work out how to do pin-curls or something...

The tweaks I made to this first attempt  were

,Putting some arbitrary darts in and taking a bit of the fullness out of the waist to make it a bit more fitted and rely less on a waist tie to cinch it in
,It thus needed a zip in the back
,A circle skirt
,Made the bodice fully lined with a light cotton rather than use facings
,Didn't sew the waist ties into the side seams. Instead made a seperate band tie that went all round the front to tie at the back. Think I rather it with a belt tho.

Things I like about this make

,My pattern matching at the back around the zip. Such satisfaction.
,I think the fit makes it comfy but flattering, with a wider waist and a tie this would be the case even more so

Things I don't love quite as much

,The front gapes out a bit at the neckline rather than sitting against my chest. I think next time I'd best take some width out of the front in the middle which I could afford to do cos this one the neckline is quite. a wide square.
,How wonky my hem has become. Because I didn't wait and hang my circle skirt before hemming it. Whose fault is that? Mine. It is entirely mine.

A great pattern!

The Asteria dress is a lovely pattern, and I really enjoyed sewing it. It's a vintage-inspired style, but the semi-fitted shape with definition provided by waist ties means that it's much comfier than other dresses of a similar overall silhouette. The looser shape also means that there's no need for any fastenings (other than for the optional button front), which means that it's a fairly simple pattern to sew.

The fact that the pattern has multiple cup sizes makes it easier to get a nice fit. I made the size recommended for my measurements and it turned out nicely. I lengthened the bodice by an inch and the skirt by 2 inches, but that's fairly standard for me (I'm 5'9").

The instructions are very detailed and I found them easy to follow throughout, so sewing the dress was a breeze. I'm already on the look-out for fabric to make another version!
