Buy the Barkly Skirt sewing pattern from In the Folds. The Barkly Skirt is a panelled A-line skirt with pockets and a range of interesting and fun to sew details. It has been designed to be worn all year round - in summer in soft linens with sandals and in winter in denim with tights and boots.

View A sits on the natural waist (the top of the waistband will sit just above the natural waist) and features a shaped waistband, slanted pockets that are inset in the side panels, and a hem facing. View B sits just below the natural waist (as it features a waist facing, rather than a waistband) and has patch pockets (which are therefore optional) and side splits in the hem. Both styles feature a centre back invisible zip for a clean finish.

The styles can be mixed and matched so that you can combine your style preferences. More information can be found in the style variation kit here (also included in the PDF pattern).

Suggested fabrics: The Barkly Skirt is compatible with mid-weight to heavy-weight fabrics such as linen, cotton canvas, cotton drill, denim, corduroy or wool. Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure and drape in the skirt.

Fabric requirements: You will require more fabric if lengthening.

Sizes A - J

View A: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 1.4 - 1.8 m (1.6 - 2 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.1 - 1.5 m (1.3 - 1.7 yd).

View B: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.1 m (1.9 - 2.3 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.3 - 1.8 m (1.5 - 2 yd).

Sizes G - P

View A: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.2 m (1.9 - 2.4 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.5 - 1.9 m (1.7 - 2.1 yd).

View B: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 2.1 - 2.9 m (2.3 - 3.2 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.8 - 2.1 m (2 - 2.3 yd).

Sizing: A – J and G – P (approx. UK 6 – 26/28 and UK 18/20 – 44). Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.

The Barkly Skirt is available in two size brackets: sizes A - J and sizes G - P. Select a size based on your hip measurement. If your waist and hip measurements are in the overlap section of the size charts (G - J), the designer suggests using the G - P range to achieve the best fit.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 170 cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN/SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length.

Notions: Coordinating thread; 25 cm (10") invisible zip; 0.5 m (0.5 yd) of light to mid-weight fusible interfacing.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (50 pages for sizes A-J, 62 pages for sizes G-P); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets for sizes A-J, 3 sheets for sizes G-P). This pattern has layers so you can print just the size(s) you need.

Emily and her team did a great job of explaining how to assemble this skirt, and I feel like it was the best explanation I’ve had of how to insert an invisible zipper. Especially helpful was the tip to sit down and measure your hips in that position before choosing your size- the spread is real folks, and you don’t want to make something you can’t sit down in! I’m going to use that tip for all my closer fitting skirts, pants, and dresses in the future.

I really love the roomy pockets and graphic design of this skirt. The waistband is a great size, and the hem facing is genius.

I would love to make this skirt again, especially the versions with the more involved pattern lines, and play with color families, or varying patterns in the same color palette. I would recommend this skirt to a wide variety of sewists because it’s not that difficult to assemble (depending on which view you choose), the instructions are so clear, and also there’s just so much choice and variety to make this a fun project for more advanced sewists as well (which I’m not).
