I Am Irma dress in a viscose Ecovero satin

I made the I Am Irma dress version in size 44. It's rather long in the back so I didn't add any length to it. I'm 5'7" (170 cm). I made it in a viscose Ecovero satin fabric from Fabric Godmother. This fabric was a bit slippery so I used pattern weights, traced my pattern pieces, and then cut them out. You can see more construction deets and photos on my blog.

I really like the hidden button placket and the bishop sleeves on this pattern. It also comes with a classic cuffed sleeve option, as well as a shirt-length version with a curved hem.

The construction is straightforward. They say to sew the buttonholes and buttons at the beginning, before you assemble the back or attach the sleeves or collar. When I sew a garment, I always sew the buttonholes and buttons last. So that’s what I did with this dress. However, if you wait until after you have attached the collar and collar stand, then it’s tricky to sew the first buttonhole because you can’t fully open up the placket. Whoops.

So I just moved that buttonhole a little further down from the top to compensate. The next time I make this pattern, I will remember to sew the buttonholes right after sewing the placket!

Dramatic Irma is a bit of welcome frosting

This was one of those projects that I loved as soon as I saw it, bought it and printed it off the same day. It's quite a dramatic design from their new I AM Magic collection, but I really liked the tailored top half mixed with the flirty bottom, and the design details are really nice: the concealed placket, box pleat and pleated sleeves.

I decided to use this floaty crepe I got on Goldhawk Rd a couple of years ago and made a straight 46. This corresponded to my high bust measurement and I'd have normally graded out from bust out, but didn't because of all the ease, so I'd recommend checking the finished garment measurements when picking a size.

I really loved sewing this and I wrote a full post about it with construction details and pics here if you're interested in the whole story. :) Definitely recommended and I just another pattern from the same collection thanks to my experience with this one.

Absolutely fabulous!

I am head over heels in love with all of the designs in the latest collection by I Am Patterns, but the Irma shirt is just STUNNING.

You can read all about my shirtdress and the beautiful fabric I used on the Sew Me Sunshine blog.
