Oversized colour block coat

Pattern Description: I am your coat this winter. I am cosy and sophisticated. Wrap me around you, I will warm you in my arms and pamper you all winter.

It comes in coat and jacket lengths.

The lining comes as an add-on. It's just a booklet with instructions, you will have to use the main pattern pieces.

Pattern Sizing: 36-46, I cut a size 38, but could have even gone down a size. Their measurements put me in size 42, so it's very very oversized.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I made quite a few alterations, so whilst it maintained the overall idea, it does not quite look like the pattern envelope.

Were the instructions easy to follow? I only glanced a bit at the instructions for the body. I did not follow the lining instructions because I had made changes to the collar and the steps did not match anymore.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the oversized shape, kimono sleeve and the in-seam pockets. These are elements I kept. I was not too keen on the shawl collar, so I took it out and replaced with facings.

Fabric Used: Wool coating in two colours

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I added 30 in lenght to take it to knee length. As per Geo's PR review, I added 10 cm (4in) above the pockets and 20 cm (8in) below the pockets. I also removed the shawl collar and used large metal snaps instead of buttons for the closure.

I also removed 1 cm from centre back and 1 from shoulder seam, as I have a very narrow back.

I also lined it with some crepe backed satin I had in my stash.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I think this pattern has a lot of possibilities and I might not be done with it just yet. I might make a lighter jacket for spring. It's a very simple and quick make, recommended for beginners too.

Conclusion: I love my coat so much in spite of its few flaws. I have been wearing it loads already and feeling quite cosy and stylish too!

Be aware that there is a lot of fabric wastage with this pattern, because of the kimono sleeves. Even if it had not been for the colour blocking, I would have put a seam in the sleeve, just to stop so much fabric going to waste.

Artemis Coat - i Am patterns

I knew I wanted to make this up as soon as I saw the pattern. It was the first time I had used a pattern from I AM PATTERNS but I found the instructions easy to follow and was a really good quick sew with only a few pattern pieces. I think it makes a really great beginner jacket pattern. I didn't make any adjustments to it as I didn't mind the oversized fit of it, and decided to add on gold buttons as I liked the option of being able to wear it open or buttoned depending on what I was pairing it with. I also really like the fact that they offer a bonus lining pattern for free which is what I used to do mine in the red gingham. Overall a great pattern if you are looking for a comfortable jacket that you can just throw on with anything.
