Buy the No. 6 København Dress sewing pattern from How to Do Fashion. This late-1950s inspired dress is an absolute favourite. With its defined waistline, low back and pencil skirt, it’s all about celebrating the female form. The pattern has two versions: one classy and one sassy.

Version 1: Dress with a halterneck and bust pleats in the centre front seam. It closes with a zipper at the centre back, and the bodice is fully lined.

Version 2: Dress with a high collar at the front and a low cut back (which still hides your bra strap). The bodice has a princess cut and is fully lined.

Fabulously fifties!

This is a really lovely pattern and would be perfect for an intermediate sewist that likes a bit of vintage inspired fashion!

As I had never made this dress or used a pattern by How To Do Fashion before, I decided to use some inexpensive fabric for my first attempt and call it a 'wearable toile'. I picked up this 1.8m viscose twill remnant for £9 and I think it's worked well for the pattern. It doesn't give much structure to the dress, so details like the skirt pleats aren't as defined, but it is beautiful quality and I think the drape works well for the garment.

I downloaded the instructions to make the København and was quite surprised that there were only a couple of pages for what I would deem a fairly involved make. If I hadn't constructed similar garments before I definitely would have struggled with the steps provided, so I wouldn't recommend the pattern for a beginner.

I made a straight size 6 as the measurements matched mine almost exactly and I think the fit is really good, particularly at the waist and hips. There is a little bit of excess fabric between the bust and the arm, so I would look to make an alteration to improve this on my next version - perhaps a small bust adjustment.

I'm delighted with the finished garment and I'm already thinking about making another version in some beautiful vintage cotton sateen from my stash! The collar detail is really unusual and sophisticated and I love the silhouette of the dress too.

No. 6 KØBENHAVN DRESS

I chose to make this gorgeous dress which is the ‘No 6 Kobenhavn‘ from ‘How to do fashion‘ for the #SMYLY challenge on Social media. No 6 is a beautiful pattern company from Denmark created by Nanna whos beautiful designs are vintage inspired. I picked it not only because I absolutely love this dress and fifties style (my favourite era), but the design also shows off those ‘flaws’ that growing up I hated and am now proud to show off. It also tells the story of what a fantastic community us sewing folk are!… Nanna contacted me via Instagram and asked if she could send me one of her patterns as she thought it would suit me, a week later I received two gorgeously packed patterns from Europe. The How to do Fashion’s selection of patterns are full of inspiring feminine designs with a vintage feel, the website is full of online instructions, blog posts and a free pattern if you sign up to their newsletter! I used this gorgeous leopard print ponte roma from Minerva Crafts, the pattern called for a woven fabric but i think it worked really well in a knit too.
