Buy the Blackwood Cardigan sewing pattern from Helen's Closet. The Blackwood Cardigan is a cosy and versatile addition to your wardrobe. Designed with layering in mind, it has minimal excess fabric in the front and a close fit around the neck and shoulders. Its fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect for wearing under jackets and vests, while also looking stylish over tank tops and dresses. View B ends at the hips, while View A extends down to the mid-thigh and includes patch pockets at hand level. The Blackwood is intended to be worn open and is not designed to close at the front.

What we think: The proof is in the pudding with this pattern. It's been made up by so many members of the community. It's really versatile in terms of what you can wear it with and using different weight jerseys can transform its look.
Suggested fabrics: Light to medium weight knit fabrics with at least 40% stretch widthwise and 20% stretch lengthwise. Try a cosy sweater knit or french terry for a warm layer or make it in jersey for a lightweight cover-up.
Fabric requirements: The fabric requirements are provided for 59" (150 cm) wide fabric. When using fabric narrower than that, the bottom band pattern piece for sizes 32-34 will not fit onto it. In this case please select a wider fabric or follow the instructions in the pattern for how to piece the bottom band together.
View A (longer): 59" (150 cm) wide fabric: 1.9 - 3 yd (1.7 - 2.7 m) // 45" (114 cm) wide fabric (sizes 0-18 only): 2 - 2.8 yd (1.8 - 2.6 m).
View B (shorter): 59" (150 cm) wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.5 yd (1.5 - 2.3 m) // 45" (114 cm) wide fabric (sizes 0-22 only): 1.8 - 2.5 yd (1.6 - 2.3 m).
Sizing: 0 - 34 (approx. UK 6 - 34, based on our standardised size chart). This pattern includes two size options. There is a B-cup pattern for sizes 0 - 22 and a D-cup pattern for sizes 12 - 34. Please check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.

This pattern has been drafted for a 5'6″ (168 cm) tall person.

I'm normally a very slow sewing and this came together so fast. Instructions are clear & very easy to follow. It is spot on.
Fabric was a brushed French terry
Only adjustment I made was to widen the pockets - entirely because I was too afraid to figure out how to add the patch pockets so I just widened them to go from edge to edge of the front piece & just include it when overlooking the neckband side seams. Will definitely be making more of these.

I chose mid-weight purple merino from Fabricbox and the blue merino from For Fabric Sake. I used 1.5m of 145cm wide fabric for each cardigan. Both versions are size L in the shorter version. I sewed the garments entirely on my overlocker.
The Blackwood upper sleeve is designed to be narrow, which isn’t the best for layering. I changed the shape of the upper sleeve. I cut and spread the top section of the sleeve pattern to add a box pleat detail – this allows more ease in the upper sleeve head.

I made 4 Blackwood cardigans by now and I love them all. It is a cozy cardigan but is fitted and looks great on everyone. With this one, I decided to keep the side seams straight to see how that would turn out and I like it. the fabric colour is just amazing and I wear it when I need a lift me up colour.
I omitted the pockets, made it in a shorter version but made the neckband double the width.

It's one of those patterns that may not necessarily make your heart beat faster but once you make it, you will wear it again and again. Perfect for this weather that can't decide if it's warm or cold.
I made the longer lenght - I'm 5'3.
Alterations: I omitted pockets and topstitching - I find it hard to do fiddly topstiching on a stretchy fabric and I omit it whenever I can, for a cleaner finish.

I am on my second Blackwood cardigan and already planning my third, this is such a versatile garment. The two I have made are both the longline version, and the next one will be the short version. It is a really simple make, and the instructions are very clear. I made both of mine on my sewing machine using a walking foot, then overlocked the seam allowances, as the fabrics I used were quite thick. It could be made entirely on the overlocker in which case it would be a super quick make.
I shortened it by two inches as I am only 5'4".
