Suggested fabrics: Four-way stretch knits with at least 70% stretch horizontally and vertically. Look for nylon spandex, cotton spandex, bamboo jersey, or rayon jersey. For leggings that aren’t intended to be layered, make sure to find a fabric that is 100% opaque. Look for ‘performance jersey’, ‘technical fabric’, ‘activewear knits’ or ‘dancewear’ when shopping.

Great pattern, excellent instructions

This is a great pattern for activewear leggings. I sized up because my fabric didn't have the recommended stretch, which worked well.

I used the deeper waistband and it's really comfortable and reassuring when bending over etc!

I've worn these leggings during Pilates and cardio and can confirm successful work outs all round.

I've included more information on adjustments and fabrics in my blog post:

Dec 2022 update - I'm still making Avery leggings!  I've mended the waistband issue and can confirm these are much better for cardio with a small waist/bigger hip ratio.  The elastic helps hold them in place...I should not have deviated from the pattern and listened to Helen!

Never buying RTW leggings again!

This was my first make in months, but went together quickly and easily - even the gusset was fine thanks to the instructions. I omitted the waist elastic (just a personal preference), and graded between a S at the hips and a M at the waist. I was a little worried because they looked absolutely tiny as I was sewing them up, but they fit like a second skin.

The only downside is that it took me ages to source fabric with the required amount of stretch, but it was worth the wait!

Avery Leggings

I’ve sewn two pairs of these leggings so far...with more on the horizon, it’s just a case of finding the right fabrics - you need a 70% in both directions. I made mine in a ‘sports’ jersey that has a slight sheen, so they’ll ideal for what I wanted them to be - yoga pants.

They are a very simple pattern but with a few interesting details still. For example they have no outer leg seam, which would mean they’d work great as a base layer too, a waistband that smoothes, whether you choose the high or mid rise version and a gusset for increased range of motion.
