Buy the 221 Adult/Child English Smock sewing pattern from Folkwear. Smocks have been worn by rural labourers as protective overgarments for hundreds of years. The technique of hand-smocking evolved from the way many of these early garments were fitted, sized, and embellished. English smocks were most widely worn during the late 18th century. Today, smocks are favoured by artists, craftspeople, and fashionable folk everywhere. This loose-fitting smock is sized for both men and women, and the Round Smock version is sized for children as well.

The Round Smock is mid-calf length and slips over the head. For children, the smock is knee-length. The Smock Frock has a button-front opening and is tunic length. Both versions may be hand-smocked on the front, back, and sleeves, or easily 'mock-smocked' by machine with elastic. Instructions and designs for smocking and embroidery are included in the pattern.

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: One of the pattern pieces is divided across two A0 sheets. The two sheets will need to be joined with no overlap. 

Suggested fabrics: Soft, medium-weight fabrics with some drape such as cotton, rayon, wool, synthetics or blends in challis, broadcloth, corduroy, or flannel. For an authentic look, linen homespun.

Adults:

Round Smock: 45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 3 3/8 - 3 5/8 yd (3.09 - 3.31 m) // 60" (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/4 yd (2.52 m).

Smock Frock: 45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 2 3/4 - 3 5/8 yd (2.52 - 3.31 m) // 60" (150 cm) wide fabric: 2 - 2 1/4 yd (1.83 - 2.05 m).

Children:

Round Smock: 45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 1 1/2 - 2 7/8 yd (1.14 - 2.63 m) // 60" (150 cm) wide fabric: 1 - 2 yd (0.95 - 1.83 m).

Sizing: Adults: S – L (Chest 30 1/2" - 42" / 78 - 107 cm) // Children: 2 - 12 years. Please check the designer’s size charts and finished garment measurements.

Notions: 

Round Smock: Thread; 1/2" (13 mm) buttons for cuffs; two 3/8" (10 mm) buttons for neck.

Smock Frock: Thread; nine 1/2" (13 mm) buttons for cuffs and front opening; one 3/8" (10 mm) button for neck; 7/8 yd (81 cm) of light to medium-weight interfacing for front placket.

Either smock: For mock-smocking, 6 yd (5.5 m) of 1/8" (3 mm) wide elastic.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; print-at-home pattern (33 pages for adults, 24 pages for children); 36″ wide copy shop pattern (1 sheet for adults, 1 sheet for children); A0 copy shop pattern (2 sheets for adults, 1 sheet for children).
