Buy the ZW Tie Top sewing pattern from Birgitta Helmersson. This zero waste (ZW) top has an oversized shape with a relaxed fit and comes with high neck and low neck options as well as three different garment lengths. The top features an attached neck band which turns into a tie that can be positioned at the front or back neck. The pattern also includes instructions for adding side splits and for adding gathers and a cuff to the sleeves.

THE METHOD

Zero waste pattern cutting is a bit like a puzzle. It is a method of pattern drafting where you utilise a length of fabric end to end by strategically planning your pattern pieces so that everything is used. This pattern does not require printing large pattern pieces. Instead, you draw your pattern pieces directly onto your fabric with the aid of a cutting plan and templates. This method has several advantages:

1. More flexibility. This method allows for easy changes such as using different fabric widths and making simple fit and design changes yourself. Using patterns that fit into a zero waste square or rectangular block is a very efficient way to work. It means that it is easier to patchwork together remnants or use leftover fabrics you already have lying around.

2. An easy way to learn to self draft your own patterns. Working this way will help you to start building a toolbox of skills, and you will learn an alternative method of self drafting which is super easy for beginners to understand.

3. Less fabric and paper waste!

NOTE: With the exception of some templates, this zero waste pattern has no pattern pieces. You will draw the pattern directly onto your fabric by following the step-by-step instructions and using the templates. The templates print on two A4/US letter pages.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following format:

Suggested fabrics: Light to mid weight cotton or linen, as well as mid weight silk or viscose. Fabrics with some structure or drape both work well, and each will give a different look to the finished garment.

Picture perfect

I had rated highly this pattern already when I realized you just need 0.55m of fabric to make (short sleeve version, size one). I made mine in softened linen and turned out very pretty - possibly the first time my construction looks exactly like the designer's picture. With very simple cuts and seams it takes little time to make- though it may take some time at the start to understand how zero waste patterns work. Will look into more zero waste patterns, it's so gratifying.
