Buy the Unisex ZW Coat sewing pattern from Birgitta Helmersson. The ZW Coat is an unlined, oversized, unisex coat with a batwing sleeve, round collar and patch pockets. The short coat has a front button closure, and the long coat has a front button closure and waist tie. The pattern also comes with tips on how to cut a lining if you want to add one.

The short coat is suitable for beginners and up. The long coat is more suited to mid-intermediate sewers. However if you make the short coat as your first project and progress to the long coat for your next one this would work well, as a lot of the steps are the same.

NOTE: With the exception of some small templates, this zero waste pattern has no pattern pieces. You will draw the pattern directly onto your fabric by following the step-by-step instructions in the pattern booklet and using small templates which you can print easily on your home printer.

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following format:

– PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

Suggested fabrics: Woven fabric. A mid to heavy weight wool will work really well. You can also use a heavy weight cotton drill or something similar for more of light jacket or trench coat style.

Fabric requirements: 145 - 160 cm (57" - 63") wide fabric: Short coat, 140 cm
(55 1/2" or approx. 1.55 yd) // Long coat, 200 cm (78" or approx. 2.2 yd).

Sizing: Size 1. This is a single size pattern which fits EU 36 - 44 (approx. UK 6/8 - 14, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size chart and finished garment measurements.

Note: The designer is working on expanding the size range of this pattern. We will add the expanded size range as soon as it is available.

Notions: All optional: Bias tape or binding, approx. 3 m (118") for the long coat; 3 buttons, 2 - 2.5 cm (3/4" - 1"); iron-on fusing or interfacing if you are using a lighter weight fabric, approx. 25 cm (10"); elastic or a length of cord (can be threaded through the back hem of the short coat to bring it in a bit like a bomber style jacket); lining.

Additional tools: Chalk or dissolvable pen; large right angle ruler and/or long straight ruler.

PDF pattern includes: Instruction booklet; A4/US letter print-at-home templates (13 pages). With the exception of some small templates, this zero waste pattern has no pattern pieces.

Turned out to be a lovely coat

The instructions for this coat were simple and easy to follow. However, being quite petite, I found that the one-size coat appeared very oversized on me. The collar was adorable, although achieving a nice finish required hand stitching.
