Buy the Kila Tank sewing pattern from Allie Olson. The Kila Tank is a fitted tank top designed for stretchy knit fabrics. A slight racerback design gives this top a sporty look. Kila’s deep scoop neckline and armholes are finished with a bulk-free binding method that mimics ready-to-wear techniques.

The Kila Tank has several inches of negative ease making it a great basic layering piece. Kila can be tucked into high-waist pants, overalls, and skirts. Because it’s sewn in super stretchy fabrics, Kila is also a great workout top or pyjama top for hot weather.

Suggested fabrics: The Kila Tank should be sewn using knit fabrics with at least 60% stretch and good recovery. If using a knit fabric with less than 60% stretch, the designer recommends sizing up at least one size for a comfortable fit. Cotton/spandex and rayon/spandex blend rib knits are ideal for the Kila Tank. 100% cotton knit fabrics are not recommended due to poor recovery. Fabrics weighing 5-9 oz/yd² are recommended.

Fabric requirements: Additional fabric may be required for directional prints or print matching.

Sizes 0 – 18 / B cup

45" (115 cm) or wider fabric: 1 - 1 1/4 yd (1.0 - 1.1 m).

Sizes 12 – 30 / D cup

45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 1 1/4 - 2 yd (1.1 - 1.8 m).

54" (137 cm) or wider fabric: 1 1/4 - 2 yd (1.1 - 1.8 m).

Sizing: US 0 – 18 / B cup and US 12 – 30 / D cup (approx. UK 8 – 18/20 and UK 14 – 32, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size charts and finished garment measurements.

The Kila Tank is offered in two separate size ranges: one drafted for a B cup (sizes 0-18) and one drafted for a D cup (sizes 12-30). The D cup straps are 1/4" wider to cover full-coverage bra straps. Measure your upper bust and full bust to determine which size chart applies to you.

This design is drafted for a height of 5'6" (167.6 cm) with several inches of negative ease. The designer recommends choosing a size based on your bust measurements and grading at the waist and/or hips as necessary. If your measurements fall between sizes, choose the next size up.

Ideal basic vest top pattern

I have been looking for a pattern for a basic knit vest top to wear as a pyjama top and the Kila tank by Allie Olson Patterns really fit the bill.

The Kila tank has a lovely shape to it and I particularly like the subtle racerback detail.  The pattern also uses binding to finish the neckline and armholes, which I thought was a lovely detail and would give a really smart finish.

The pattern specifies that the tank should be sewn using knit fabrics with at least 60% stretch and good recovery.  It adds that you should size up if using knit fabric with a lower stretch percentage.  I used a basic cotton jersey with a lower stretch percentage so I did size up.  I also wanted the tank to be fairly loose fitting anyway as it was intended as sleepwear.  So I sized up 4 sizes (From size 0/2 to size 8/10).  I'm glad I did as even with this increase in sizing, the fit isn't very loose.  This pattern definitely has a large amount of negative ease built in.

Overall this was an enjoyable and fairly straightforward sew.   The only slightly fiddly bit was attaching the knit binding.

It is a great basic vest top and I will definitely be making more.  It would work well as a pj top, as a summery vest top or as an activewear top too.
