Buy the York Pinafore sewing pattern from Helen's Closet. The York Pinafore is a playful addition to your handmade wardrobe. It is easy to layer over tank tops for summer or turtlenecks and leggings for colder weather. The York Pinafore is a modern take on a classic pinafore dress with a cocoon shape and two views. View A features large scoop pockets, a dipped neckline, and comes to the knee. View B is a shorter length with a high neckline and a kangaroo pocket.

What we think: This is a classic with a twist. The cocoon shape is perfect for any other pear shapes out there, and the relaxed nature of the dress will make it easy to fit. It works well in summer over a T-shirt and would look great in corduroy over a polo neck in the winter.
Suggested fabrics: Medium to heavy weight woven fabrics such as cotton twill, denim, wool, linen, corduroy, and canvas. Crisp lightweight fabrics such as cotton and lightweight linen can also be used for a warm-weather pinafore. Use drapier fabrics such as tencel twill, wool crepe, rayon crepe, or viscose poplin if you prefer a softer, less structured look.
Fabric requirements:
View A (longer view): 57" (150 cm) wide fabric: 1.4 - 2.2 yd (1.2 - 2 m) // 45" (115 cm) wide fabric: 1.7 - 2.7 yd (1.5 - 2.5 m).
View B (shorter view): 57" (142 cm) wide fabric: 1.3 - 1.9 yd (1.1 - 1.7 m) // 45" (112 cm) wide fabric: 1.6 - 2.5 yd (1.4 - 2.2 m).
Sizing: 0 - 34 (approx. UK 6 - 34). Please check the size chart and finished garment measurements.
Notions: Thread; 4 yd/m of 1/2" (1.3 cm) wide double fold bias tape.

Well there's beginners and then there's me. I have made one cotton dress before and felt I could surely manage this.
On the positive side
I have a wearable garment.
The pattern was simple to follow.
I was able to adapt the torso length and accommodate my big cup size.
On the negative side
Two words - bias binding. This is NOT easy if you havent done it before. The pocket went OK, after watching a few YouTube videos but 3 times I had to redo the disgustingly puckered neckline. Ripped out both the top and understitching twice as it would just NOT lie right. This is after I made an arse of the armholes without noticing. Now the skirt looks gathered at the sides.
Have learned a lot and next time I will cut more carefully, measure exactly, and be less hash bash with the bias binding.

I absolutely love a pinafore dress and the York is simple to make, fun to wear and really versatile. I think this is a great beginners pattern and as long as you are ok with bias binding, you'll have no problem whipping this up!
The fabric I used is a really unusual stretch suedette from Sew Me Sunshine. It's thick enough to give good stability to my pinafore, but has enough 'give' and drape to make it super comfortable - winning! The bold floral design is lovely and I had a lot of fun pattern matching my pockets.
Helen's Closet instructions are fantastic - each step is so well written and there are lots of tips and tricks along the way, so even a more experienced sewist will learn something new! I made the size 'small' pinafore, which is the alternative to a size 8/10 in the newer edition of the pattern with updated sizing. I made the version with the higher neckline and regular pockets. I altered it slightly by removing 1.5" from the side seams at the waist, as I found it gaped too much on my first version. I also added a bias binding hem finish - I've never tried this before, but I love how neat it looks!
This is my second version of the York and I don't think it will be my last - I wear them so much and find them easy to style for all seasons. I'd love a York in a plain fabric and I'm on the look out for some nice bright corduroy.

I think I’ve found my favourite pinafore pattern. This is my second version which is the button down hack that Helen has on her website. It’s such a quick and easy make. It hardly needs any fabric and I love the bias binding finish.
Helens advice on fitting is amazing and she explains exactly how it should be fitting each point. I graded from a M at the shoulders to a L at the waist and did the FBA lengthening at the top.
I also have my wearable toile version which is perfect so don’t like calling it that anymore!

I have had my eye on the York for absolutely ages but didn't get around to actually making it until last weekend. It was the perfect project to take to the Sewing Weekender with me: quick to make, small and very few pieces and basically no fitting necessary. Finishing the neckline and armholes with bias binding is what took the longest but I really enjoy the process.
My hips are a size 10 but I decided to go down to an 8 and that was perfect. The top half is a size 6 though, graded out at the bottom of the armholes/waist. The fit is really good.
Can I take a moment to appreciate the size of these pockets?! They're AMAZING! So so big and wonderful.
I made the short version, with a dipped neck and patch pockets but I want to make another with the crew neck and kangaroo pocket as well. Let's face it, I live in pinafores in the winter so there's no way that I won't be making another soon.

This reminds me of the pinafores I used to wear in the 90's.
I've made 2 with the different pockets but both had the high neckline and longer length.
This was my first time using a bias binding facing and now I'm obsessed I want to finish everything this way, it really makes the insides as pretty as the outsides.
I used a drapey faux suede. If I had used a more structured fabric I would've taken in the waist as I'd feel to exposed. Other than that I didn't have to make any adjustments just blending between sizes where needed
