Buy the Xanelé Shorts sewing pattern from French Navy. This beginner-friendly pattern is named after the designer’s adventurous friend Xanelé (pronounced Shan-a-lee). These shorts were inspired by, and created for, their 5 am Table Mountain hikes together.

The Xanelé Shorts are an easy-to-wear summer staple that can be styled up or down depending on your mood or occasion. The pattern features an elasticated waistband with optional belt loops, a pleated front and a cuffed hem that ends around the mid-thigh. A versatile addition to your handmade wardrobe, the Xanelé Shorts are perfect for the beach and climbing mountains, yet are equally well suited to days spent working from, or relaxing at, home.

Note: A pattern expansion (sold separately) is available for the Xanelé Shorts. Use the Xanelé Longs Pattern Expansion to lengthen your Xanelé Shorts into slightly cropped, straight leg trousers or full length, tapered trousers.

Suggested fabrics: Light to medium weight wovens such as linen and linen blends, hemp, tencel and chambray. If selecting medium weight fabric, it is recommended that the fabric has some amount of drape.

Fabric requirements: 150 cm (60″) wide fabric: 122 cm (1.3 yd) // 115 cm (45″) wide fabric: 162 cm (1.8 yd).

Sizing: A – I (approx. UK 6 – 18/20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

When selecting your size, your hip measurement and the finished hip measurement are of primary importance, as the elastic waistband is adjusted to achieve your desired fit at the waist. The Xanelé Shorts are drafted for a height of 171 cm (5’7″). You can adjust the pattern if you are taller or shorter using the LENGTHEN/SHORTEN lines on the pattern pieces.

Notions: Thread; 5 cm (2″) wide elastic, approx. 65 – 115 cm (25 5/8″ – 45 1/4″), length will be determined when fitting your shorts; safety pin; fusible interfacing (optional).
