Buy the Unisex Shirt sewing pattern from Modern Sewing Co. This is a classic shirt with a neat but fairly broad shoulder and a very straight torso. Instead of narrowing towards the hips like typical male shaped cuts, there is slightly more room to accommodate the wider hip of more female body shapes. Even with this adjustment, the piece remains first and foremost a men’s shirt pattern, but one that anyone can wear based on their cut preferences.

This pattern comes with three different sleeve length options to tailor it to your personal requirements, and the construction process follows classic shirt making methods.

These patterns are next level!

I made a Darcy for my niece last year, and she was so happy with the coat that I decided to make her some more work clothes. She liked this shirt so I found a chambray to make the first version and it is lovely. The details on this shirt make it close to high-end ready-to-wear, using run and fell seams on the sides and sleeves which give it a nice finish. It is such a great basic pattern I am planning to make it again in a check for my niece and in many different fabrics for myself.

Some things to note: the run and fell seams are on the outside and the bobbin stitching will show, I guess it could be done on the inside instead if your machine doesn’t do a nice bobbin stitch. The seam allowances for the run and fell seams have already been adjusted so if you are not planning to do them, the seam allowances would need to be changed. I found that marking the edge where the two parts line up made it easier to sew them. Also note that the seam allowances vary throughout the pattern, this is clearly marked on the pattern pieces and in the instructions, but beginners take note, especially when making the collar and collar stand. I did purchase the shirt making workshop which had 3 patterns included, and I would recommend the course, especially if you are nervous about some of the details or haven’t made many shirts before.
