Beautiful coat

The first coat I’ve made. Considered myself a confident beginner so was a bit daunted when I read the pattern was for intermediate/experienced sewers, especially as I’d set my heart on welt pockets. I practiced the welt pocket and found it ok, the instructions were very clear, so I set out to make my coat. It has taken me a week and I am really happy with the result.
I used a cotton moleskin and lined it with cotton lawn. I’m very happy with it. It’s a lovely design, and oversized; I have narrow shoulders so used the finished garment sizes to select the best one for me and it fits well, with plenty of space for other layers. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I’m planning to use this as my smart winter coat so am looking forward to the cooler weather now to wear it.

Lovely coat!

I enjoyed making this coat, my first and am very pleased with the result. I made it in a Moon wool fabric (it's not as bright as the photo suggests). It was all very straight forward but I did quite a few practise WELT pockets until I was confident to work on the coat itself. I didn't make the belt and as yet haven't put buttons on as I quite like just wrapping it around. For a contrast it has a pink lining!

Beautiful Coat

I have made several Modern Pattern Co designs and enjoyed all of them.  But this coat I wanted to make as soon as I saw it!  It took some time to decide on fabrics and I won't lie it is a long and absorbing make but it is so worth it.  There are no techniques beyond any sewist with a little experience.  The time is in the finish (for me anyway).  I handstitched the facing into place, and shaped the collar the same way.  I also took a lot of time over the sleeve details as I wanted to echo the fabric pattern in the strap.  It was my first ever pattern match too - so that took half an age.  Next time I will use a plain fabric - which will give a very different vibe.

The result is a warm, elegant coat with two very different looks.  The photo is without the  belt but it looks lovely with it too.
