Suggested fabrics:

Swimwear stretch knits with at least 50% stretch horizontally and vertically. Look for nylon or polyester knits with high spandex content. You may want to look for chlorine-resistant fabrics for swimming pools and/or fabrics with a UPF rating over 30 for sun safety.

Swimwear lining provides extra comfort and coverage in your swimwear. It is optional but recommended. Look for stretchy nylon or polyester fabric specifically labeled as swimwear or swimsuit lining. You can also line Sandpiper in lightweight power net or firm power mesh for more support.

Fabric requirements: You will need the same amount of fabric for both the main swimwear fabric and lining fabric. You can make mix and match top and bottoms using different fabrics! You can also make the waistband from a different colour or print.

View A: 57″ (145 cm) wide fabric: 1 - 1.4 yd (0.9 - 1.3 m) // 45″ (115 cm) wide fabric (sizes 0-26 only): 1.3 - 1.4 yd (1.2 - 1.3 m) // Elastic: 2.1 - 3.8 yd (1.9 - 3.4 m).

Such a Fan of Helen's Closet

I'm a huge fan of Helen's work. Her pattern drafting is so clean, and her instructions are absolute perfection. Everything I make is hassle free.

I made a muslin out of scraps from leggings. It fit my 57 year old body well straight out of the package. Just for personal preference, I shortened the straps about 1/2 inch, and shortened the tongue of the front by another half inch, just to hold my DDD **** a little higher and tighter.

I swim on a team, so I need a suit that performs. My suit can't catch air on a flip turn or fall off when I dive. With Sandpiper's high neck and full bottom, this suit is a DREAM COME TRUE. I feel fast and secure in the water.

I also need to be able to get a suit on and off! This one works. It strikes a perfect balance between negative ease and maneuverability.

I'm making mix and match pieces from Blackbird Fabrics in watermelon rind, caper, and black. I lined the tops with power mesh (once again for support) and the bottoms with regular swimsuit lining.

I couldn't find 1/4 inch swim elastic so I used 3/8. Worked fine.

Thank you, Helen. You're the best. Style and high performance together!!!

great pattern - Sandpiper Swimsuit

Wow,   I always struggle to feel body confident with swimsuits.  I am 34DD and need a lot of support and also 50 so wanting full bottom coverage.  When I saw swimsuit fabric for sale, I thought why not?

This pattern was an excellent choice  for my first try.  I love the style of the top, showing off the shoulders but also the design is similar to a sports bra so provides support by squashing the **** in.  I think the end result is flattering to all body types and the best I'm going to get without going for an underwired style.  I love the deep bottom band, it's very comfortable and visually narrows the body.

Another big plus was being able to create different sized bottoms to the top!    I had sewn knickers before and this was a similar process, easier in some way because there is no gusset.  Again there is a band option, which for me is a softer look as its fabric rather than elastic on your tum it is a  kinder look for my squishy belly.

The top pattern can either be adjusted at the top near the shoulders or under the bust, I am 5'4 and took an inch of the shoulder but this was the only change I made, the fit was true to size and fits me well.

I am super super happy with the end result, the fabric only cost $20 for a yard of both swimsuit and lining, and I have loads left!  I will definitely make more now I know how easy it is and could also make the top for working out

Love love love!!!

I love the sporty design of this suit.  I wore it paddle boarding this summer and felt like a boss  <3 <3

Helen's instructions were awesome-  I've never attempted sewing swim-like fabric but I felt confident with Helen's guidance.  I also love that after Helen releases a pattern, she follows it up with blog posts full of sewing tips and resources to make your project successful.   I bought a “swim grab bag” from Peekaboo patterns, which contained enough yardage to make this suit (with lining) plus a basic muslin.  On her blog, Helen does have a tutorial to add cups to the top, which I would probably do in future when working with a solid fabric to provide a little more coverage.

Sizing seemed right on.  I made a straight size 16 (B cup, 42" full bust, 36" waist)
