Buy the Child/Teen Gecko Swim/Sports Shorts sewing pattern from Petits D’om. The Gecko shorts feature two lengths (mid-thigh or above-the-knee), an elastic waistband with an optional drawstring, and optional front pockets with welt-like bands. For the swim version you can add inner briefs (mesh) or an inner boxer (lycra). For a sports version, add the boxer lining in jersey or lycra. The inner boxer can be made in a shorter or longer length, so if you choose the shorter shorts with the longer boxer, the lining will protrude from the hem of the shorts for a super cool look! You can also sew the shorts without a lining.

Suggested fabrics: 

Main: For swim shorts, use a fine and strong woven fabric that will dry quickly and is resistant to chlorine, sun and sea salt. This will usually be made of 100% polyamide or polyester. You can also use seersucker. For classic everyday shorts, choose a medium weight woven fabric.

Inner briefs: Mesh lining fabric.

Inner boxer: If the shorts are for swimming, use a lycra fabric. If the shorts are for sports, you can use a jersey or lycra fabric.

Fabric requirements: 

Main: 140 cm (54″) wide fabric: 45 – 120 cm (1/2 – 1 3/8 yd).

Inner briefs (mesh): 140 cm (54″) wide fabric: 40 – 65 cm (1/2 – 3/4 yd).

Inner boxer (lycra or jersey): 140 cm (54″) wide fabric: 55 cm (5/8 yd).

Sizing: 2 – 16 years. Please check the designer’s size chart.

Notions: 2.5 cm (1″) wide elastic, 48 – 71 cm (18 7/8″ – 28″); 8-9 mm (3/8″) wide rubber elastic (non-transparent) for inner briefs, 62 – 110 cm (24 1/2″ – 43 1/4″); optional drawstring, 90 – 120 cm (36″ – 47″) + 2 eyelets (you can also sew buttonholes); if you want to cut the pocket band in contrasting fabric, 20 cm x 20 cm (8″ x 8″).
