Falling in love with the Sanda coat

I am falling in love with the Sanda coat by Merchant & Mills.
It seemed to offer just what I was looking for. The understated style and cut of the coat appealed to me, it is a timeless design with a Japanese aesthetic. More importantly, it would be easy to wear over winter layers and sweaters.
The instructions are easy to understand and follow. However, I decided to construct the coat in a completely different order and way than what was recommended in the instructions.
This was a simple coat to construct, and it came together relatively quickly. I preferred to fully line this coat, but would consider making an unlined mid-season or summer version with Hong Kong seams for a lighter weight fabric such as corduroy or linen.
The coat was perfect for my needs, and I am pleased with the outcome. In the future, I will definitely be tempted to make other versions. I have no doubt that this coat will gain popularity among many sewers.

Lovely slouchy oversized coat/jacket

Pattern
The Sanda can be made as a coat or jacket, lined or unlined.  Its currently available as a PDF, but will soon be available in paper format. As PDFs are my preference I printed out and assembled the pattern a couple of days after it was released, but you could always opt for copy-shop if that’s not your thing.  It has a great size range UK6-18 and UK18-28.
Fit

This is an oversized coat/jacket with a drop sleeve so no real fitting required.  My measurements are close to a size 10 and I sewed a size 10 with no modifications (I usually size down in M&M patterns but for this one I didn’t).

I love the versatility of this pattern and can see myself getting great use out of it.  The fact that you can sew it unlined or lined, short or long gives you so many options.  It can be sewn in many types of fabrics to give a different look.  Its a very straightforward sew and would be a great choice as a first coat to make.
