Klum House Slabtown Backpack

Buy the Slabtown Backpack sewing pattern from Klum House. The Slabtown is a heavy-duty rolltop backpack, built for adventurous makers. It features a spacious main compartment with a quick-access zipper, front zipper pocket, adjustable leather backpack straps, and side pockets for water bottles.

Note: All Klum House patterns are designed for success on a home sewing machine. You do not need a fancy sewing machine or industrial equipment to make these “domestic machine friendly” patterns (though the designer does recommend a more robust/heavy-duty home sewing machine for the Slabtown).

Suggested fabrics: 

For the exterior, choose a fabric that will give the bag plenty of structure, such as a 9-12 oz. canvas, waxed canvas, or denim with no stretch. The designer’s favourite exterior fabric is waxed canvas for its structure, durability, and water resistance.

For the lining, use a 10-12 oz. cotton, canvas, or denim with no stretch. The designer’s favourite lining fabric is 10 oz. natural canvas because it provides added structure and its light colour makes it easy to find things in the bag.

All the leather pieces should be 8-10 oz. in weight, except for the leather zipper pulls and washers, which should be 5-7 oz.

Fabric requirements: 

Main: 60″ (152 cm) wide fabric: 3/4 yd (0.7 m).

Accent: 60″ (152 cm) wide fabric: 1/2 yd (0.5 m).

Lining: 60″ (152 cm) wide fabric: 3/4 yd (0.7 m).

Leather: 40″ x 1 1/8″ leather strips + 100″ x 3/4″ leather strips + 6″ x 3″ leather scrap + 5″ x 2″ leather scrap (5-7 oz.).

Sizing: Finished dimensions: 17 1/2″ H (rolled down) / 24 1/2″ H (extended) x 11″ W x 5 1/2″ D (44.5 cm / 62 cm x 28 cm x 14 cm).
