Buy the 253 Vintage Bathing Costume sewing pattern from Folkwear. This design, dating from around 1890, features a gored skirt with deep pleats in the back. The skirt buttons at the waistband over a knee-length romper. The bodice features short puffed sleeves and a whimsical sailor collar and tie, with an optional inset “modesty” bib. Top it off with the jaunty bathing cap for an authentic look.

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: Some of the pattern pieces are divided across two A0 sheets. The A0 sheets will need to be joined with no overlap. 

Suggested fabrics: Medium-weight cottons, linens, and blends (original garments were made in light to medium-weight wools). Similar weight cottons and blends for lining. Light to medium-weight cotton, linen, or silk for tie.

Fabric requirements: For fabrics with or without nap, pile, or one-way design.

Bathing costume and skirt: 45″ (114 cm) wide fabric: 5 3/4 – 7 yd (5.27 – 6.4 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 3 7/8 – 5 7/8 yd (3.56 – 5.37 m).

Lining: 45″ (114 cm) wide fabric: 1 – 1 1/2 yd (0.91 – 1.37 m) // 60″ (150 cm) wide fabric: 3/4 – 1 1/2 yd (0.69 – 1.37 m).

Tie: All widths: 1/2 yd (46 cm).

Cap: All widths: 1 7/8 yd (1.72 m).

Sizing: XS – 3XL (approx. UK 4/6 – 28/30, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

Notions: Eleven 3/4″ (2 cm) buttons; 2 1/2 yd (2.3 m) of 3/8″ (1 cm) wide elastic; 1 1/2 yd (1.4 m) of 1/2″ (13 mm) wide single-fold bias tape // Optional trim: 12 yd (11 m) each of narrow soutache and narrow rickrack trim.
