Buy the TPC2 Asymmetric Hem Dress sewing pattern from Trend Patterns. This design was inspired by the different hems seen on the AW16 New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion week catwalks.

This great dress is so versatile - using different fabrics will completely change the look. Use something stiffer like satin to hold out the skirt for a more dramatic look or something softer for a more flowing romantic feel. Make it in a fancy fabric and it's perfect for a wedding or make it in something plain for a great day look. Dress it up with heels or dress it down with a roll neck underneath. Let your imagination run wild!

Note: Trend Patterns are suited to a more confident maker.

something a little left field

Trend patterns are very design-led and I’d put them in the same category as Named for their originality. I like the asymmetric dress because it’s wearable and quirky at the same time and it would look great in a variety of fabrics. I made mine in plain crepe but anything with a stripe, check or bold design could look really striking, especially for a special occasion which is what I intend mine for. I did find the instructions for this one a bit sparce, particularly if you’re a novice sewer but I’ve been in conversation with the designer and it’s something she’s looking into amending. Don’t be put off though, it’s still basically a bodice and skirt, they are just unusually shaped. I added sleeves because I wanted a winter dress and I’ve written a comprehensive blog post if you want more information from a dressmaker’s point of view. susanyoungsewing.wordpress.com
