It’s the second episode of series 10!

In the second episode of The Great British Sewing Bee series 10, eleven new contestants are challenged with making a half zip fleece, upcycling cricket whites and a made-to-measure outfit for a specific sport to fit a model. For episode two we have put our detective hats on to discover the sewing patterns from independent designers and commercial pattern houses used in Sewing Bee TV show. The patterns below are all matches or inspired by the designs used in the second episode of the Great British Sewing bee series 10. The theme this week was inspired by the sport, in honour of 2024 being an Olympic year. All eleven contestants had to make three garments. The challenges included making a sportswear staple, the half zip fleece, upcycling cricket whites and protection to create a whole new outfit and a made-to-measure outfit for a specific sport for an international sporting event to fit a model. Take a look at our sewing pattern suggestions below, we’ve tried to find the exact patterns used but where we haven’t been able to  we have plenty of suggestions so that you can recreate these looks at home for your handmade wardrobe. Sewing Bee: Pattern Picks

Pattern Challenge 1: Half zip fleece

The first challenge of the second episode was to make the sportwear staple, a half zip fleece. The fleece pattern was made with a zipped patch pocket, which was sewn into the seam of the half zipper. The cuffs and hems were cover stitched for a sporty finish. Here is a similar sewing pattern you could try at home.

Wardrobe by Me Men’s Zip-up sweater

The Zip-up Sweater is a sporty pullover with a zipper from the neck to the chest. The sweater is roomy and comfortable with dropped shoulders and side pockets. Make it with a stand-up collar or a cosy hood.

Simplicity Unisex Sweatshirt and pants S9828

His and Hers sweatshirt and Trousers sewing pattern from Simplicity. It’s perfect for an advanced beginner/intermediate dressmaker. Front half zip sweatshirt has dropped shoulders, long elasticized sleeves, elastic cord at the waist and front pocket with contrast flap. Pull-on track pants have tie cord and elastic at waist and hem plus two cargo pockets with zipper.

Transformation Challenge 2: Cricket whites and protection

In the upcycling challenge contestants had to upcycle cricket whites and protection into a completely new garment. Specific patterns weren’t used for these tasks as contestants had to create a garment from existing materials in a fixed time so it’s a bit tricky for us to make sewing pattern suggestions based on these design ideas.

Made-To-Measure Challenge 3: sporting outfit for an international event

In the last challenge of the first episode, all the contestants had to sew a made-to-measure casual day dress. Here are our pattern picks for the contestants and where sewing patterns have been self drafted or hacked we have suggested an alternative.

Georgie’s sporting outfit

Features: Trinidad and Tobago track kit with elastic binding, Spandex, mesh crossover and matching overlay.

Patterns:

Top: Madalynne Roxie/Sports Bralette and swim top. The Roxie is a sleek, asymmetrical bralette that features a high neck overlay and wide bottom band. View A has no bust darts and is available in band sizes 30-44 and one cup size, which is based on A-C cups. View B has bust darts to accommodate larger cup sizes and is available in band sizes 30-44 and A/B, C/D, (DD)E/F, G/H and I/J cups.

Ailsa’s sporting outfit

Features: Team Canada golf kit with half zip polo shirt and hook and eye skorts.

Patterns:

Top: Simplicity dresses and tops S9328. Misses’ zip-front dresses and top with stand collar and sleeve variations. Designed for stretch knits.

Skort: Harper Shorts and Skort – Megan Nielsen. Stylish and comfortable shorts or a pleated skort, Harper sits just below the natural waistline and features a modern fit, two lengths and a full lining. Version 1 is a pair of shorts with curved patch pockets. Version 2 is a pleated skort with slash pockets which combines the comfort of shorts with the appearance of a skirt.

Marcus’s sporting outfit

Features: Speed climbing kit with paneled t-shirt, jersey shirts and fleece lined chalk bag.

Patterns: 

Top: Vikisews Men’s Marc t-shirt. Marc is a men’s tee with a loose fit and straight cut. It features dropped shoulders and short set-in sleeves. The crew neck is finished with a band. Marc is hip-length.

Features: Ugandan Rugby kit with flag transfer, stand up horse shoe collar and coverstitched hem.

Pattern: McCalls Men’s Knit Tops and shorts M8485. Three-button placket and self-collar polo design tops have a classic look and feel. Pattern includes shorts with elastic waistband, piping trim, and contrast options. The material is stretchy to ensure that you can play in comfort.

Features: Golfing two piece with button placket polo shirt, and front and back pockets on the skirt.

Pattern: McCalls Knit Top and Skorts M8481. Stylish racquet or tennis ensemble. Tops have three-button placket, collar, optional contrast and purchased stretch piping or trim. Skorts with elastic waistband have purchased stretch piping or contrast at the bands.

Features: Weightlifting unitard with Kenyan flag colours and 16 Spandex panels.

Features: Jazzy leotard with yellow and blue bodice with crossover detail and reverse fabric panel.

Pattern: New Look N6752. Long sleeve bodysuit has either a deep V-neck wrap front or a mock neck. Bodysuits are a staple for every modern wardrobe. Sized for stretch knits only.

Pattern: Megan Nielsen Rowan Bodysuit and Tee. This bodysuit and fitted tee is the ultimate wardrobe builder. The pattern features a figure-hugging close fit, three neckline options and three sleeve lengths. View A is a short sleeve tee with a crew neckline. View B is a 3/4 sleeve tee with a v-neckline.
