Crushing on Shirts

I love a shirt… in my humble opinion, you can’t have too many. My absolute favourite type of shirt is a twist on a classic. If you throw in an interesting sew too then you’ve got me hooked. There have been some super new shirt patterns from the indie designers of late so I decided to focus on a few of my absolute favourites and show you around them.

First up is the Olya shirt from Paper Theory, this boxy boyfriend cut shirt has so many fantastic details. If we have a look at the line drawing you can see that there is a really interesting cut on the front panel and sleeve. You can see it’s cut in one piece. Anyone who’s sewn a shirt before is going to enjoy this unusual construction. The benefit of the seam line running across the cheest is the opportunity to have in-seam pockets added in, these big statement pockets add another great feature.

Next up we have The Assembly Line front pleat shirt… how great is this for spring? You can see that it’s got a fab box shape, is cut so that it sits slightly longer at the back for the shirt with really chunky turn ups on the sleeve. The key detail is the beautiful pleat detail at the collar. These giant darts create an architectural shape to the shirt and I love that the collar lines up with the pleat. For anyone who likes shopping in Cos this shirt is for you.

The Donny shirt from Friday Pattern Company has got everyone swooning. This is so great as it’s got a lot of shirt details but the construction is much easier. It’s a cropped pop over style with a lapel style collar. Details that make it feel really special are the facing that goes around the neckline with stitch detail. This has a nod to vintage construction and I feel this is a shirt you’ll reach for over and over again.

The Closet Core Jenna shirt is an absolute classic. Honestly, I can’t think of a classic shirt shape that I’d like to sew more. There are three styles to choose from, so this pattern really delivers good value for money. I love the boxy shape of this shirt, variation A sits longer with an interesting curved hem with side gussets. So those of you who like more of a crop then check out Version B,  the crip hem at the bottoms makes it look super modern. Let’s not ignore this fab floaty shirtdress. It’s ticking all the boxes for me.

This shirt is quite frankly sensational. The Maker’s Atelier has nailed it again giving us a shirt with three very different looks, all of which I want to sew immediately! The classic variation is less boxy than some of the other shirts featured. Let’s face it we are all here for the other two variations. Let’s talk pleating… this super back panel on the shirt is so clever and such fun detail. I love how unexpected it is from the front & will be a really fun sew. Next up is the variation with the gathering on the back yoke and sleeve head. This created a softer more romantic shape and a lovey juxtaposition from the crisp pleats. I feel this shirt needs a round of applause…

Last but not least the Oriana shirt… for those of you who want to bring some big sleeve energy into your shirt game, this is the one. I like that there are two sleeve options with this shirt and for those of you that feel that the look above is too much, there is a mellow version with a little less fabric. The fabric choice is key for this look. Chooze a viscose for something softer and for those of you that are loving this then cotton is going to be the one.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this little round-up of crush-worthy shirts… What shirt have you sew and which is your tried and tested pattern?

  1. The Byrdie button-up by Pattern Scout is a terrific pattern. It has a plain version and one with pintucks, and can also be sewn as a shirtdress. The curved hem is just lovely. I have sewn the two different shirt patterns and have plans to sew another two.
