Stylish Schmoo Coat

A review of Vogue Jacket V8930

I’m a very experienced home sewist and yet I’ve never made an unlined coat before. This is a very simple yet stylish coat, and now I’m happy to make more unlined coats, so long as I’m using boiled wool. What a revelation! It doesn’t fray, it drapes beautifully and is warm and snuggly. I’m normally a size 6 in conventional patterns (32″ bust) with very long limbs so I made the size SM. I lengthened the sleeves by an inch, and because I stupidly didn’t buy enough, I went for a length somewhere in between the A and C length which is actually perfect for me. Modifications: I used the side pockets from C, not the patch pockets. I lined the sleeves only, which meant they there was some blind stitching at the arm hole. I attached the lining at the sleeve hem, pressed the seam allowance at the sleeve cap, turned inside and hand stitched it to hold it in place and seal the armhole seam. I stay stitched the edges at 1/4″, not 1″ so no additional trimming. I would definitely make another one, and it only took a half day (it took me a full day but I had problems following simple instructions – somehow, my brain shorted out throughout the process).
