My First Boiler Suit.

Everybody stay calm, but I’ve only gone and made a boiler suit!

For a long time I have been admiring handmade boiler suits on other people, and had managed to convince myself that this style would not suit me at all, and that I should stay away from them (I’m small and curvy, and was certain that this style only suited tall slim figures) .. how wrong can you be!

But this pattern had caught my eye some time ago, and throwing all caution to the wind I gave it a go.

I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed sewing this pattern. Maybe it is because in the run up to Christmas I was incredibly busy and any sewing that I did was quite rushed. Whereas I was able to allow myself to enjoy the whole sewing process with this pattern, dipping into it  2 or 3 hours a day.

It’s not a quick sew. There are 12 pattern pieces, but the instructions were easy to follow, and the extra details such as top stitching and faux belt loops made it such a great looking garment. I made view B which has short sleeves and cropped legs. Of course the legs were too long for me as always (I’m 5’2″) so they had to be shortened and I also narrowed them a little (but still keeping that wide leg look).

My measurements (35-29-39) put me in between a size 12 and 14 on the bust, and between a 14 and a 16 on the waist and hips. Looking at the finished garment measurements I saw that there was a generous amount of ease in this pattern and as is sometimes the case with the large pattern companies, they can sew up on the large size, I decided to keep my fingers crossed, cut a straight size 12 for my first try, and see how it went. Fortunately this worked perfectly, but I would recommend a toile first if possible, especially on a 1-piece garment like this. Do as I say, not as I do! Also don’t forget to take into consideration that the waist needs to be wide enough for your hips to slip through as you step in and out of it.

Do I love this pattern? Would I make it again? I’ll let you into a little secret – I’ve already cut out another pair…
