It has pockets!

A review of Itch to Stitch Orono Top

Reviewed by Jolette on 7th September, 2020

My perfect sweater?

Orono is comfortable, slim, long, and a good fit with the raglan sleeves.  The double front adds warmth and the neck is cosy.  Yes, it is a more interesting shape than many sweaters, but it is considerably more work.  You need to want it!  The pockets are in the side seams and are quite far back to find with your hands.  Be careful with the cross-over hem positioning to avoid an unflattering emphasis on the crotch.

Comparison

You can see it here with five other sweater patterns all from The Foldline.

Bottom Row: Orono by Itch to Stitch; Talvikki by Named; Jocko by Ready to Sew

Making up

The pattern was printed in colour which made finding the right size easy.  I cut size 6 sleeves and at the bust, grading to 4 at the waist and 2 at the hips.  There were good instructions re blending sizes, but the waist/hip alteration goes through the pocket placement and required considerable concentration.  I shortened the sleeves by 1” before I cut.    I made this using a three thread overlock to finish hem edges, four thread overlock for some construction, and a narrow zig-zag with a walking foot on my sewing machine for some construction and topstitching.  It also called for fusible stay tape for the sleeve seams and pocket opening.  I did quite a lot of tacking to make sure that the pocket sat perfectly and to be sure of the curved hem.  A considerably more intricate construction than the Southbank or LB Pullover to achieve the feature pockets and curved crossing fronts.  The pattern pieces fitted together very easily.  The fabric was ponte roma from the ClothSpot.

Fitting and alterations

This fits well, particularly across the front chest with the raglan sleeves.  The curved front sits well, and the sleeves and neck are comfortable.  Happy with the blended sizes, pleased that the pocket opening sits flat and the front curves are smooth.
