I Am Irma dress in a viscose Ecovero satin

A review of I AM Patterns Irma Dress and Shirt

I made the I Am Irma dress version in size 44. It’s rather long in the back so I didn’t add any length to it. I’m 5’7″ (170 cm). I made it in a viscose Ecovero satin fabric from Fabric Godmother. This fabric was a bit slippery so I used pattern weights, traced my pattern pieces, and then cut them out. You can see more construction deets and photos on my blog.

I really like the hidden button placket and the bishop sleeves on this pattern. It also comes with a classic cuffed sleeve option, as well as a shirt-length version with a curved hem.

The construction is straightforward. They say to sew the buttonholes and buttons at the beginning, before you assemble the back or attach the sleeves or collar. When I sew a garment, I always sew the buttonholes and buttons last. So that’s what I did with this dress. However, if you wait until after you have attached the collar and collar stand, then it’s tricky to sew the first buttonhole because you can’t fully open up the placket. Whoops.

So I just moved that buttonhole a little further down from the top to compensate. The next time I make this pattern, I will remember to sew the buttonholes right after sewing the placket!
