Fantastic introduction to Coat Sewing

A review of Bella Loves Patterns Traveller Coat

The Traveller Coat is a great introduction to coat sewing. It comes with a 57 page instruction booklet full of photos. It is a sewing marathon but if you are slow and steady and take it step by step it is certainly within reach for an intermediate sewist.

My measurements put me between 3 sizes (10 – 14). I wanted a slightly more fitted look so I went with the 10 and graded to the 14 at the waist. The pattern is drafted for a B cup which suited me well.

The fabric is a wool poly blend and the lining is a plain black habotai lining. I thought the main fabric was bold enough and a plain lining would complement it nicely. Only downside of using a checked/plaid pattern is trying to pattern match it. I think I did a good job across the collar and lapels but it’s a bit off at the side seams.

I very much recommend this pattern to any intermediate sewist whose a bit intimidated by sewing coats. I feel like I’ve learnt so much from completing this project that I’m actually looking forward to sewing another coat next winter.
