Buy the Malvern Culottes sewing pattern from In the Folds. These mid-calf length culottes will elevate your wardrobe without compromising on comfort. The pattern uses clever pleating to create volume and interest whilst hiding the seams. With two waistband options that sit on the natural waist (elasticated or straight all-in-one), the culottes feature a wrap front, hidden buttons on the waistband, and side seam pockets.

Sewing level: Intermediate

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: The pattern will show both the cutting lines (in black) and stitching lines (in pale grey). Some of the pattern pieces have been split (to fit on the A0 sheets) and will need to be joined together.

Suggested fabrics: Mid weight woven fabrics such as linen, linen blends, cotton twill, cotton poplin, mid weight denim and lightweight wool. Lightweight fabrics are also suitable, but will create a softer and more relaxed silhouette that may not hold the pleats as well. For a softer silhouette, consider sateen, silk (crepe de chine or habotai) or viscose (rayon). Due to the pleats, there is a lot of overlapping fabric in some parts of the garment, so keep this in mind and avoid bulky fabrics.

Fabric requirements:

Sizes A - J

View A: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 2.7 - 3.5 m (3 - 3.9 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.8 - 2.7 m (2 - 3 yd).

View B: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 2.6 - 3.6 m (2.9 - 4 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 1.8 - 2.6 m (2 - 2.9 yd).

Sizes G - P

View A: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.5 - 3.7 m (3.9 - 4.1 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 2.7 - 3.7 m (3 - 4.1 yd).

View B: 115 cm (45") wide fabric: 3.5 - 3.9 m (3.9 - 4.3 yd) // 150 cm (60") wide fabric: 2.6 - 3.8 m (2.9 - 4.2 yd).

Sizing: A – J and G – P (approx. UK 6 – 26/28 and UK 18/20 – 44, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer's size charts and finished garment measurements.

This pattern is available in two size brackets: sizes A-J and sizes G-P. Sizes G-J are the same in both size brackets. So if your measurements are in the overlap section of the size charts (G-J), you can use either pattern and get the same result.

This pattern has been drafted for a height of 170 cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN/SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length.

Notions: 0.4 m (0.5 yd) of light to mid weight iron-on fusible interfacing; 0.4 m (0.5 yd) of 35 mm (1 3/8") single-fold bias tape (if using pre-made binding, this is 25 mm (1") single fold binding); two 2 cm (3/4") flat buttons // View B: 32 mm (1 1/4") wide high-density non-roll elastic x (half your waist measurement + 5 cm (2")).

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4/US letter print-at-home pattern (55 pages for sizes A-J, 66 pages for sizes G-P); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets for sizes A-J, 4 sheets for sizes G-P) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: No.

Disappointing instructions

Difficult to review, as final item is nice and it was all going so well until adding pleats and waistband - but the instructions are SO confusing. I’m a confident sewer but this was TOUGH - it was the wording and diagrams that didn’t make sense. The waistband choice made no sense either - the final elasticated waist had no more or less give than the straight. Final culottes were nice, I used a cotton poplin and they feel a bit bulky. Would I make them again? Sadly no. Not satisfying to sew. 😞 I’ve given 4 stars because the design is interesting and has some inventive features - so improve the instructions PLEASE!
