Buy the Hadley Top sewing pattern from Grainline Studio. The Hadley is drapey, fluid, and sophisticated. It’s the semi-formal top that you need for work or to throw on over your jeans for a night out. View A has a jewel neck, a pleat at the back neckline, and bracelet length sleeves. View B is sleeveless and features a soft v-neck. Both are subtly geometric as they have centre seams in the front and back as well as a wide hem.

Sewing level: Confident beginner

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following format:

- PAPER (next working day dispatch on orders and FREE UK delivery over £50)

What we think: Understated and elegant, this top is bound to become a firm favourite.

Suggested fabrics: Light to medium weight fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk, rayon, voile, or lawn. Avoid fabrics that are too stiff since this top requires a bit of drape.

Fabric requirements: Extra fabric may be needed to match plaids, stripes, or one-way design prints.

Re-fashioned Hadley Top

After making this pattern once without any changes, I knew I wanted to make another version but with a slight twist to it. I love making garments my own and upcycling is one of the very best ways to do this. It means you can make something completely unique that holds the memories of what the fabric used to be.

Thanks to its simple but elegant design, the Hadley Top is perfect for hacking. I sliced the pattern into triangles (making sure to add seam allowances!) and these were small enough to be able to make the top out of old pairs of jeans. I used 3 different pairs in total to have a nice variety of diffrent shades of denim. To finish the top, I added two rows of topstitching down the front and back to mirror the topstitching of the jeans, a way of tying the fabric and pattern together.

Hadley Top - Grainline Studio

I like the drafting and instructions of this pattern, its a basic top with enough visual interest that makes it a little special and beautiful. I made this top out of a tencel twill, which gives a lovely weight to the design.
I made a size two, did a full bust adjustment and shortened it slightly because of my height.
