Buy the Calla Trousers sewing pattern from Fabric Godmother. The Calla Trousers are a pull-on style with a relaxed fit. They have a full length straight leg which finishes at the heel. The elasticated waistband sits at your natural waist. This pattern is designed for a beginner dressmaker, with options to add details that use more intermediate skills.

The beginner version has a simple elasticated waist and back pockets. You can use a contrast fabric for the side panels, but there is no added trim or piping.

The intermediate version has additional options: a drawstring at the waist, side seam pockets with or without concealed zips, and piping or trim on the side panels.

Sewing level: Confident beginner / Intermediate

This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats:

– PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF?

– PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. The PDF files will be emailed immediately after purchase, and the A0 pattern sheets will be dispatched next working day). What is Copy Shop?

Note if purchasing copy shop printing: One of the pattern pieces has been split (to fit on the A0 sheet) and will need to be joined together.

Suggested fabrics: This pattern is designed for knitted fabrics only such as medium weight jersey, ponte Roma, sweatshirt fleece, etc. The side leg panel can be made of a contrast jersey fabric or a woven fabric of a similar weight to the main fabric.

If making your trousers with a heavier weight fabric, you can use a lighter weight or lining fabric for the pocket bags to help reduce bulk at the hips.

Fabric requirements: 150 cm (59") wide fabric: 180 - 320 cm (2 - 3 1/2 yd).

You may need less if you are not using a directional fabric. If you are making a contrast side panel, you will need 20 cm (1/4 yd) of contrast fabric, and can reduce the main fabric requirement by 20 cm (1/4 yd).

Sizing: UK 6 – 30 (approx. UK 6 – 34, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

The pattern is drafted for a height of 167 cm (5'6").

Notions: Fusible interfacing; 38 mm wide soft waistband elastic; large safety pin or bodkin // Optional: contrast fabric/piping/ribbon/trim; two 20 cm invisible zips; 10 mm wide drawstring cord and end caps.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4 print-at-home pattern (40 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: Yes.

I really enjoyed making these trousers, not only are they ridiculously comfy to wear but the process was also really enjoyable.
I haven’t worked with stable knits much, I used a ponte Roma and it was a joy to work with, it handled beautifully and kept its structure once sewn.
The instructions are very clear and easy to follow and the pattern fits perfectly straight out of the pattern, the only adjustments I had to make were to shorten it for my 5’2” height. The stripe reminds me of 90s trousers and it’s such a fun nostalgic throwback.
I really recommend this pattern, I’ve already worn mine so much since making them and I’m already planning another pair.
