Buy the Aspen Dress sewing pattern from Fabric Godmother. Aspen is a midi length shirt dress with an exposed zip front opening. It has a collar and half moon stand, and two sleeve options. The long sleeve gathers into a buttoned cuff with a bound split opening. The simpler short sleeve has a deep stitched hem. An optional ruffled pocket adds a playful, softer finish, or choose the top stitched patch pocket for more of a utility look.

Suggested fabrics: Fabrics with a bit of structure, such as cotton poplin, linen and denim, will give this garment the body needed to make the most of the utility styling. If using denim, the designer recommends no heavier than 9 oz. For a fancy version, use a sparkly brocade or embroidered cotton.

Fabric requirements: The quantities have been calculated with the pattern cut in one direction. You may need less if you are not using a directional fabric.

Short sleeve: 115 cm (45") wide fabric*: 360 - 510 cm (4 - 5 3/4 yd) // 140 cm (55") wide fabric: 340 - 380 cm (3 3/4 - 4 1/4 yd).

Long sleeve: 115 cm (45") wide fabric*: 420 - 560 cm (4 3/4 - 6 1/4 yd) // 140 cm (55") wide fabric: 380 - 420 cm (4 1/4 - 4 3/4 yd).

* For sizes 24-30 in 115 cm (45") wide fabric, the skirt will need to be cut in two halves and seam allowance added.

Sizing: UK 6 – 30 (approx. UK 6 – 28, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

The pattern is drafted for a height of 167 cm (5'6") with a B or D cup. Note this is not the same as your bra cup. If there is 5 cm (2") difference between your high bust and bust measurements, you should make the B cup version. If there is a 10 cm (4") difference, you should make the D cup version.

Notions: Iron-on interfacing, 30 cm (12") for sizes 6-12 or 50 cm (19 3/4") for sizes 14-30; closed end dress zip (see chart) // Long sleeve version: two 12-15 mm buttons.

PDF pattern includes: Instructions; A4 print-at-home pattern (54 pages); A0 copy shop pattern (3 sheets) // Layers: Yes // Projector file: Yes.

First ever collar on a fab dress

I was nervous about making the bodice as I had never made a collar before. However the instructions were clear and the full colour photos really helped. I loved making this, although the gathers in denim needed some patience. I made this for my eldest, can’t wait to make one for me. I cut a size 14 D cup and the smallest size skirt because I didn’t want it too full in a heavy denim. The photo isn’t great but just had time to take a quick snap before taking it to my daughter!

New favourite dress pattern

I’ve been wanting to make this dress for a while, and now I’ve finally made it I can’t believe I waited so long! No only was it an absolute joy to sew, it looks amazing and is really comfortable.

The fit is relaxed without being boxy. I made size bust cut D size 12 and the fit is perfect.

I usually hate sewing in zippers and will go out of my way to avoid them, even hacking shirring into my patterns to not have to insert a zipper, but this was actually really painless. It was such a simple and easy insertion method that I actually quite enjoyed the process.

I shortened the skirt by 3” to fit my 5’2” height and the length is exactly how I wanted.
The only tricky bit I found was gathering the skirt because I used a 9oz denim, I found patience was the key and a lot of chocolate and swearing.

I honestly can’t recommend this pattern enough, I’m already planning a summer version.
