This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following format:

- PAPER (next working day dispatch on orders and FREE UK delivery over £50)

Suggested fabrics: Make a fluid, drapey Kalle with soft fabrics like tencel, linen, rayon challis and silk crepe de chine. Crisper fabrics like poplin, chambray, voile, flannel and traditional shirtings will create a more structured silhouette.

Fabric requirements:

45" (1.14 m) wide fabric: View A: Sizes 0-6 = 2 yd (1.8 m) / Sizes 8-20 = 2.25 yd (2 m) // View B: Sizes 0-14 = 2.5 yd (2.3 m) / Sizes 16-20 = 2.75 yd (2.5 m) // View C: Sizes 0-14 = 2.75 yd (2.5 m) / Sizes 16-20 = 3 yd (2.75 m).

58" (1.5 m) wide fabric: View A: Sizes 0-6 = 1.5 yd (1.4 m) / Sizes 8-14 = 1.75 yd (1.6 m) / Sizes 16-20 = 2 yd (1.85 m) // View B: Sizes 0-6 = 1.75 yd (1.6 m) / Sizes 8-14 = 2 yd (1.85 m) / Sizes 16-20 = 2.25 yd (2 m) // View C: Sizes 0-6 = 2 yd (1.85 m) / Sizes 8-14 = 2.25 yd (2 m) / Sizes 16-20 = 2.5 yd (2.25 m).

Sizing: 0 – 20 (approx. UK 6 – 20, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size chart and finished garment measurements.

This size range is based on a B cup bust and an average height of 5’6″. Please note that B cup does not refer to bra sizing, but rather to the difference in inches between high and full bust. A 2″ difference between those measurements is equivalent to a B cup.

NotionsLightweight fusible interfacing; 1/2" shirt buttons: cropped = 5, tunic = 8, dress = 9, popover placket = 4.

Note: This pattern is available in an expanded size range on the designer's website (PDF only).

Kalle Love - Closet Core Patterns

Absolute love for the Kalle shirt and dress pattern - I had to cut a bigger size recently but it was worth it. This one is soft linen viscose with some neon trim! More on my blog here:

Wax Print Kalle Shirtdress

Super late to the Kalle party but I love this pattern and can see why so many people rave about it. I have made all 3 versions. the cropped one is just waiting for some buttons.

I think my favourite is the dress length.

I cut a size 6 in all versions and the only alteration was to add about 5cm to the length. I was surprised by how many pattern pieces there are!

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the online sew-a-long really is helpful, especially if you are a beginner sewer. I did find the instructions for the collar construction a bit clunky and ended up using my favourite version, which I think is the Grainline Archer one.

I've written more about this over on my blog - ragbagsandgladrags

Kalle Shirt - Closet Core Patterns

Making this shirt was so much fun. I love how many different options you could choose from. I made view A with the hidden placket and band collar and I love the way it turned out. The instructions were very good and they have extra tutorials on their website if you need more help.

I feel that this shirt looks very sleek and minimal and a unique flare to a button-up top.

Would absolutely make it again and again.

Already planning my third!

If you have never made a shirt before I highly recommend the Kalle pattern. Not only are the instructions fantastic, there is a wealth of blog posts and online tutorials on the Closet Core website to help you along the way. You also get a LOT of variations for the pattern price (three lengths, two collar types and three placket options) and if you want a long-sleeved version, you can purchase the expansion pack.

I made my shirtdress in a beautiful cotton from Merchant and Mills and added buttons from Maven Patterns. I cut a straight size 4 and I think the proportions are great - comfy and cosy, but too oversized. Adding the sleeves was incredibly straightforward and I adore the deep cuffs!

You can read all the details of my shirtdress and see lots more photographs on my latest blog post here.

Kalle shirtdress in extended sizing

The Kalle shirt, tunic and shirtdress is a classic modern indie pattern and I was delighted to hear that Closet Core Patterns were bringing out extended sizing. The new range is 14-30 and the drafting is based on a D cup, which I am. I tested the 16 D shirtdress and was really pleased with the outcome. I made virtually no adjustments, which was pretty different to when I made the cropped top using the original size range.

The fabric is a gorgeous Japanese lawn: Kokka Shadow lawn, which was a dream to sew and lovely to wear.
