TOP 10 SLIP DRESS SEWING PATTERNS

Slip dresses

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a newbie to the sewing game, this blog post has got you covered with options for everyone.

This list includes both bias cut and straight cut slip dress patterns, so you can choose the style that suits your sewing abilities. The bias cut offers a more flowy and draped look, while the straight cut is easier to sew.

Les Perlines Cove Slip Dress

Quite possibly the most perfect slip dress pattern there is, Cove includes sleeveless, short-sleeved, and long-sleeved options, as well as two different lengths, making it a dress for every season. The bias cut skirt makes this dress deceptively comfortable thanks to the added stretch the bias cut gives it.

Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip Dress

If you want the classic cami-style slip, I recommend the Saltwater Slip. This bestselling pattern is a more approachable sew as it isn't cut on in the bias. You have a choice of two length options and optional side ties to add a bit of waist shaping. Wear this slip over a tee shirt, under a sheer dress, or on its own! The pattern includes cup size options (B/C and C/D) which can really help with fitting.

Sewing Patterns By Masin Sicily Slip Dress

This romantic bias-cut slip dress seems to be adored by all who make it, which is a rare thing. It’s wedding-guest-ready and is ideal for a summer ceremony but can be styled with a faux fur jacket or bolero for a winter wedding. The longer-length view sits in the ‘evening wear’ category, so could be your does-all-the-fancy-events dress!

Atelier Jupe Chloe Sundress

If you prefer your dresses to be more flowy and less close fitting, I have an option for you. The silhouette is slightly A-line and falls into a ruffle hem which balances proportions nicely. The best bit? The optional cross back spaghetti straps. It's a beautiful detail that delights in the back of the garment. You can also cinch the dress in at the waist with a tie belt.

Tessuti Fabrics Sadie Slip Dress

This bias-cut-beauty is the classic slip dress choice that has oodles of styling potential. Features include a shaped neckline with facings, spaghetti straps, and optional back darts (for less drapey fabrics such as cottons and linens). For a more casual look, Sadie looks great worn with a fitted tee underneath or paired with a jacket or cardigan.

Nina Lee Alameda Slip Dress and Skirt

If you are interested in making a bias slip skirt too, this 2-in-1 pattern gives you that option. The dress has a nipped-in waist seam (with an optional side seam zip) to lend definition, whilst the skirt features an elasticated waistband. It's a surprisingly simple pattern so confident beginners and beyond will enjoy this project.

Maison Fauve Paola Dress

This pretty number is perfect for hot weather holidays where you want something that will take you from the beach to the bar. The front neckline is rounded, and the back neckline has a set of unique sliding ties. The dress sits just above the knee and has two pockets where you can slip your hands, whether you're strolling nonchalantly by the sea or sipping a drink in a rooftop garden.

The Patterns Room Ales Dress

I'm labelling this as the 'skimming slip' as it gives you the gorgeous slip shape, without being clingy. Ales is a pullover slip dress with deep scooped necklines at the front and back that still allow for bra coverage. You can make Ales as a top, a long, dress with a back slit, or a long dress with a gathered hem panel for extra volume, making it a pretty useful pattern to have in your stash. The straight cut isn't cut on the bias, making it easier to sew.

Tammy Handmade Jessica Dress

Jessica is a classic slip dress with a delicate cowl neckline and thin straps. This slip-on style has no tricky fastenings and a choice of two skirt lengths. Back ties cinch in the waist to create a timeless silhouette. The bias cut gives the dress beautiful drape and ensures it moves with you. If you have never sewn something cut on the bias, Tammy has a YouTube tutorial on sewing this dress, which could come in handy!

Paradise Patterns Smultron Dress

I wanted to include another slip dress option that wasn't form fitting, for those who prefer this kind of fit. Smultron is a fun, voluminous design that’s easy to adapt to different lengths and works with an impressive variety of fabrics. You can mix and match the details to sew your perfect summer dress - all benefitting from the bias cut drape!

Has that left you ready to sew something slinky? I hope you are inspired to add a slip dress to your handmade wardrobe!
