SEWING PATTERNS FOR TEENS AND TWEENS
Kate Underdown

Are you trying to start your sewing journey and are finding that you struggle to find patterns that are designed for teenagers that you would actually want to make yourself? Maybe you’ve had some encouragement to get stitching and have somebody who wants to help you get going, but you want to choose the styles you sew yourself? One of the most important parts of sewing for beginners is finding something you actually want to sew. If you can’t wait to make something up, you’re far more likely to finish (and learn loads along the way!).

Maybe you know a budding dressmaker who would like to take up sewing but is struggling to find pattern companies that cater to teens and tweens, both in size range and in style? We often have emails asking for patterns that would be great for young sewists, so we have shortlisted a few indie designers that are worth a look! This could be especially handy with just a few weeks of the summer holidays left… there’s still time to sew your own clothes before heading back to school!

Fieldwork Patterns was founded by Sue, who has created a collection of styles inspired by the clothes she made for her teenage daughter. There are some fab (and popular) styles in the range that can be worn for daily life – from dungarees to pinafores to culottes.  All the patterns are designed to slowly increase sewing skills starting with the first collection of easy, no zip styles. You can put your own stamp on these styles with choice of fun fabrics!

Sizing: UK 6/8 – 18/20

Bara Studio doesn’t design specifically for teens, but there are a few styles that are a UK 8 – 14 that may work! They are a perfect capsule of summer patterns and have video tutorials for the project (in German with English subtitles) which can be really handy when you’re starting out!

Also not specifically designed for teens, Workshop patterns have some great styles that are well worth a look. The sizing starts at a UK 6/8 and there are plenty of designs that are approachable for beginners. The Peggy Top (bottom right) needs less than a metre of fabric and is designed for absolute beginners, so is a great pattern for making your first top!

Hi! I’m wondering if The Workshop is still in business. The link does take me any where and I couldn’t find the brand. There was a really cool like pull over hood-less hoodie. Kinda like sweater. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m really sad that I can’t find it. 😣
