Buy the Southport Dress sewing pattern from True Bias. The Southport Dress is designed to double as a cover-up at the beach and a dress for around town. It has a button opening at the centre front, drawstring waist, and in-seam pockets. View A hits 20" below the waist. View B is maxi length, hitting 42" below the waist, and includes a centre front slit.

Sizing: US 0 – 18 or US 14 – 32 (approx. UK 6/8 – 18/20 or UK 16 – 34, based on our standardised size chart). Please also check the designer’s size charts and finished garment measurements.
Note: The size ranges have been drafted from different blocks. The 14 - 32 block has a slightly more curvy set of dimensions than the 0 - 18 block. The 14 - 32 block has a D instead of a C cup (meaning a 4″ rather than a 3″ difference between your full and high bust) and has a 1″ larger difference between the waist and hip circumference. Both size ranges are drafted for an average height of 5’5″.
Notions: 3 yd single fold 1/2" bias tape; 1/4 yd lightweight interfacing; four (sizes 0-18) or five (sizes 14-32) 1/4"-3/8" buttons; safety pin.

As soon as I saw the Southport dress @patsypoomakes made last summer, I knew I just had to have one! It's a pretty simple sew and would be suitable for anyone familiar with inserting button holes and creating a bias tape neckline.
I used a lovely khaki green viscose linen from Sew Me Sunshine for my dress. It was incredibly well behaved during construction, is beautifully soft to wear and hardly creases at all! I spent a whole day lounging about in the garden in my Southport and when I took it off and hung it up in the evening it hardly looked like it had been worn - result!
This is only the second time I have used a True Bias pattern and I thought the instructions were excellent. They are clear, set out nicely and very easy to follow. The way the bias tape is finished at the button placket is super neat and the drawstring casing construction is very clever too - top marks!
I made the size 2, as I have a small bust and was worried about gaping, and I'm delighted with the fit. There's plenty of ease in the hips where I need it, but the bodice sits nicely across my shoulders and chest. The only tiny alteration I made was to make the second turn of the hem 1/2" instead of 1".
If I made the dress again I wouldn't do anything differently because I absolutely love it! The size and shape are perfect for me and it's a comfortable and wearable dress, which I'll be living in all summer. I usually struggle to find maxi dresses that suit me, but I'm tempted to make the full-length version next and have the perfect fabric in my stash!

I've only discovered the Southport this year and it has now become one of my favourite summer dress patterns. It's very simple and quick to sew and incredibly comfortable to wear. If you're not a fan of bias binding, this is not the pattern for you. The neckline and arms are finished that way. There are buttons at the front but they don't have to be functional as the neckline is wide enough for the dress to be pulled on and off.
There are 2 skirt lengths on offer as well and although I'm not usually one for a maxi length I'm very very pleased with this one. I've worn it quite a few times already and I know that will continue. This is my second version. I've also made the knee length one.
The instructions are great and the finishing on this is superb. Apart from side seams, everything is enclosed - and I did french seams for mine anyway.

This is my second (finished) Southport. (There was a third but I made a size down which wasn't going to fit so gave up.) I made it in a gorgeous Seasalt cotton voile.
I made the size 14, I have a short body and found the neck line a little low on my first version, so removed 2 inches from the front bodice straps. I also scooped out the arm scythes by a 3/4 inch and lengthened the skirt by 2 inches.
I am very pleased with the alterations as its a perfect fit now! It has been so lovely to wear in this hot weather!
