Buy the TPCSH2 Box Pleat Shirt sewing pattern from Trend Patterns. Many designers regularly feature a shirt in their seasonal collections combining traditional elements with themes from the main collection. The Trend Patterns shirt collection likewise features traditional shirts with a twist.

This shirt has a straight silhouette. Box pleats across the front panels are tacked closed over the bust to the waist giving a slight flare at the hem as the pleats open. It has a concealed placket in the front and a set in, shirt style sleeve with a delicate bound cuff placket and narrow fitted cuff detail. The collar is a stand only for a clean minimal look.

Note: Trend Patterns are suited to a more confident maker.

If you like a challenge or want to upgrade your construction skills then this McQueen-inspired box pleat shirt could be for you. It has a concealed button placket and stitched down box pleats and the back features a yoke. I found the instructions and diagrams clear and informative but it might help if you have a reasonable level of knowledge to begin with, just to see you through to the finish line. Nothing is inherently difficult to achieve though so just take your time. The fit is intentionally over-sized, I made a UK12 but I could easily have come down a size, it depends on the look you’re going for though I guess.

Crisp cotton poplin is perfect to use but don’t just be limited to that, softer, sheerer fabrics would work as well.  I wrote a full blog post with my thoughts and tips over on susanyoungsewing.wordpress.com if you’re interested.
